I would like to head for Portland in early June and visit several of the waterfalls along the Columbia River. Where is a good and convenient place to stay? Bringing the wife and need to keep her happy. Cost is not a major issue. Thank you.

There is a Best Western in Troutdale, drive by it all the time have never stayed. If you want to keep the wife happy check out Edgefield its a McMenamins property. There is a nice spa, several resturants and bars on site. Its a historic building and property. My wife and I try and stay there at least twice a year. Its minutes to I-84 or the old highway that takes you to all the waterfalls.

Columbia gorge hotel outside of hood river is the grande dame of the gorge. It's a drive back towards PDX for the falls, and not exactly in hood river if she'd like to visit the town, but it is charming. You could also stay across the river in Stevenson, Washington, at Skamania lodge if she's in to spa days.

Hood River

Edgefield is also a wonderful suggestion. I got married there.

I stayed at the Best Western Plus in Troutdale. It was nice enough, and gave quick access to the gorge, but there wasn't much around there for your wife. It's in a mostly residential area, with a Walmart and some fast food places across the highway.

There are the Outlet stores that might burn some hours for the wife.
