I just picked up a practically brand new 5DII now I'm wondering if I should offload my 50D. I shoot mainly portraits but the occasional sport or aviation shoot comes up. I haven't done much in flight shots lately but hopefully with the weather warming up I'll be able to get out more. My daughters competitive cheer team coach also just asked if I'd shoot the rest of their season which are all indoor competitions. So my question....would I miss the 50D?

No. It's worth more to you as a second body than the money you will get from it. My 2 cents.

Current market value is in the $350ish range. Do you need the $350 more or a back up more? If it's just going to sit in your bag . . . the $350 might go toward some new glass?

I like having two different formats. I'd keep the 50D.

Bodies: 60D, 6D.
EFs: 15-85, 10-22
EF: 28-75, 35 f/2 IS, Σ70-200 OS, 100-400L
Flash: 580EX II, 430 EX II

Keep it, I still have mine with 7D & 5dMk3. It still has it's uses. As above its worth more than the money you would get for selling.

Thanks for the input guys. The only thing selling my 50D would do is help offset the $1200 I spent for my 5DII. I've already recouped $300 of it by selling the 85mm 1.8 that came with it since I already own an 85. So essentially net cost of my 5DII was a little over $900. Those with experience with both cameras, are there situations when the 50D was a better option?

When you need peripheral AF points that work. When your longest lens is 40% too short. When you don't want to risk damaging your 'good' camera. When you are out shooting with both bodies and a mugger needs to be beaten nearly to death and the only tool you have is your cameras (hint: use the 50D).

I have a 5D3 and still kept my 50D--for a backup, for the reach, to use in riskier settings, and because it makes a better bug-chasing body.

I prefer the Nikon F.

I have a 50D and use it when I need a bit more reach than the other cameras will give me. There is nothing wrong with the 50D. It gives pictures just as nice and pleasing as a full frame.
I agree with the the responders - keep it unless the need for funds dictates otherwise.

Equipment list - According to the wife - "how many more lenses do you need? Yet another camera?" ???

I was in your situation and kept the 50d for a while...well I'm technically just starting the process of selling it. It is definite a personal decision and I decided to initially keep mine for all of the factors mentioned above. As it turns out, it sat in my closet and the value continues to decrease. I am selling it and going for other gear, personally.

Good luck either way, there is no wrong decision here.

If you could use the $300-400 from selling it do it, if not keep it.

If you do any paid work, keep it for sure.
