What printer to buy?

Hello everyone. I'm looking for an A4 printer that will print descent quality pictures. It does not need to be top of the line but good enough to sell. I'm going to be shooting an event where I'll photograph the star with his fans and then print the pictures and get them signed for the them. This also means the printer needs to be somewhat portable, most desktop printers fall under this category so I don't really see a problem there. Other than with my selphy, I have never printed photo's myself, I always send them to the lab, but for this instance I will need to. Any suggestions are very welcome. Also tips on what to look for in a printer would be very handy or a trustworthy review site.

Thanks!

Consider the logistics associated with your choice. Namely, what will your throughput requirements be? E.g. if you are printing A4 and you have 100 customers, how long will it take you to print the photos? In your case the client must wait for the print in order to get it autographed. Folks could be in line a long time. I'm sure you'll get some good recommendations but be sure to do a sanity check against the manufacturers' specs.

Start by considering one of Canon's photo inkjet printers (external link). The company has consistently made units that work quickly and effectively with Canon's glossy photo paper. Usually, Canon photo inkjets will generate a good A4 print in around two minutes. I've used a predecessor of the current Canon mid-range inkjet printers to make prints for sale on demand and alwayscome away with pleased customers. Part of the trick is to use Canon's glossy photo paper: prints using that paper always come out of the printer dry and ready for the customer.

+1 - I've used Canon printers for several years now and am totally satisfied. Heck, I'm actually using an all-in-one at the moment, and I saw no quality drop from my dedicated printer.

The paper can make or break the image. The heavy-weight paper makes the photo 'feel' like a developed photo, while the glossy surface replicates the image quality nicely.

Thanks for the input. I've looked at my local reseller's site and all I see are all in one printers. On paper the PIXMA MG6350 seems to be the best one they offer. Would this be a reliable printer?

I couldn't say. I have the MX922 and couldn't be happier. I got it for the duplex scanning capability and have not been disappointed by the photo printing. I will recommend that you avoid the bargain basement model of any manufacturer's lineup, but I have no idea where the MG6350 fits.
