So I go back to Croton Point Park today sans Kevan. Took a while and a bit of hiking but spotted a mature bald eagle in a tree.

Then, at least for me, the piece de resistance, but alas, lens too damn short. 70-200 2.8 with 2x tc III.

I feel your pain. Glass is limited by disposable income...and my wife controls the latter, and by effect, the former. :)

Preferred Weapons:
Canon 7D Mk II & Sigma 150-500 F5-6.3
Canon 18-55mm EFS & 18-200 IS 4-5.6
Canon 70-300mm IS 4-5.6 III USM
Canon 50mm 1.4 & Canon 50mm 2.5 Macro
Canon 40D

You certainly ruffled that poor bird's feathers.

Good show!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that can't get those damned Eagles to sit behind every branch in the forest :D

Nice catch; how'd you even SPOT that GHO? :p

Believe it or not, I'm like Mr. Magoo (if you're not to young to get that reference.)

But I've gotten good at spotting the eagles, but the owl never. As I was driving out of the park I saw a few people photographing up toward this tree so I pulled over and went. My prescription glasses darkened as soon as I got out of the car, making it almost impossible for me to see it, in spite of this very enthusiastic young kid pointing it out to me. Then I finally saw its eyes.

As to disposable income, I've got quite a bit, but I keep spending it on other foolish items. an 8k Rolex for my wife for Christmas. 20k on my third bathroom refurb, 30k on siding for my house. It never ends.

I'm looking into leasing a lens, and that's where I'm in a quandary. I want the 200-400, but I had the Nikon version a few years ago, when I was on the dark side, and wasn't impressed with it, and also found it difficult to hand hold and zoom at the same time. I've handled the Canon once in B&H and also found it tough to hold. Or do I just get the 600? In Canada, the 600 is two grand less than here. Even with shipping and duty, it's over 1500 cheaper. In fact, now that the US dollar is worth about 1.09 Canadian, it'd be even cheaper.

I also know that he was voiced by Thurston Howell III :D Yeah, that's how I find most of the elusive ones, too.

Bummer on the owl. I seem to get a lot of birds that enjoy keeping branches between us.
