Say i edit on my desktop, and i decide to do so on my laptop now, will my previous settings to each individual photo be transferred over or do i have to start from scratch? If so how do i set it up so that the changes are synced?

I import all raw images into the DNG format in LR. That format contains the raw file, the jpg preview, and all the edits into one file. All computers with LR should be able to see all edits.

Just to expand upon MCAsan's point.......

In order for the edits to be written to the DNG file you either
A) have to make sure that LR is set to automatially write same to the file or
b) if, not automaticic, you remember to force LR to write to the file (cmd-s).

The same thing applies to using xmp side car files.

When moving between systems, if using xmp side cars, you just need to transfer the xmp file.

The simplest way to have images with LR edits available on more than one computer is to store both the images and the LRCAT catalogue file (with all the previews etc) on an external hard drive. Then just plug the drive into which ever computer you want to do the editing on. As long as all the images are one the one drive you shouldn't have any problems even if the drive letter changes, as all the file locations should be relative to the drive anyway.

Copy your catalog to the laptop along with the file structure and you will have all of your edits preserved. Although I seldom edit on my laptop, I use it as a third backup of my Lightroom images and catalog (in addition to a second internal drive on my desktop computer and a removable USB hard drive). I simply copy the folders and files and the latest catalog to the laptop. When I open Lightroom there what I see is identical to what I see on my desktop computer.

Another thing you can do besides copy the catalog, is to select just those photos you want to transfer and export as CATALOG, not your normal export (as in jpgs, dngs, etc). You can than read in this "mini" catalog in on the new machine by importing the catalog, and all those edits will have been preserved.
