Say i edit on my desktop, and i decide to do so on my laptop now, will my previous settings to each individual photo be transferred over or do i have to start from scratch? If so how do i set it up so that the changes are synced?

That format contains the raw file, the jpg preview, and all the edits into one file. All computers with LR should be able to see all edits.

Then just plug the drive into which ever computer you want to do the editing on. As long as all the images are one the one drive you shouldn't have any problems even if the drive letter changes, as all the file locations should be relative to the drive anyway.

Although I seldom edit on my laptop, I use it as a third backup of my Lightroom images and catalog (in addition to a second internal drive on my desktop computer and a removable USB hard drive). I simply copy the folders and files and the latest catalog to the laptop. When I open Lightroom there what I see is identical to what I see on my desktop computer. Ace Rimmer -- "What a guy!"

You can than read in this "mini" catalog in on the new machine by importing the catalog, and all those edits will have been preserved.
