Yesterday's sunset at the Pacific ocean in Oregon. Single exposure, stacked 2 and 3 stop Lee filters.

Your focus seems off - the rock should be better in focus and the DOF is too thin for this show IMO.

I noticed this too. The reason is that the lens was on "auto focus", something I rarely use. The angle was very low, and the camera was almost buried in the send, so honestly I didn't feel like lying on that wet sand. Instead, I simply let the lens and camera do the work and choose the focus. Well, the price was as you noted, the out-of-focus rock. But since I didn't have any better images of yesterday, I had decided to post this one regardless. I was also prepared for the critiques.

Thanks for pointing this out and noticing it.

Actually, I had captured this too, but I think the above image is compositionaly stronger, minus the out of focus and DOF problem:

f/9 as I normally do with most of my landscape shots. I think what happened with DOF here is that the camera was too close to the rock (about 10-15 inches from the rock!) and that send formation in the foreground. It obviously got "confused" to what to focus on. So, I don't think it is a true DOF problem, because f/9 is plenty good to cover the whole frame, but the focus was all messed up and that created problems. Too bad and hopefully I get a second chance soon. Next time I will bring waterproof clothes so I can lie down on the send, not worrying about getting wet and dirty. :)

Thanks for the critique!

Rub it in. I was there a week earlier. Great storm, but only had my camera out twice. Got this one, though, so it wasn't all wasted.

Chad, out of curiosity, is there a particular reason you went with a B&W version of the shot? It seems you had some nice light, so wonder why you chose not to show it in color?

QUOTED IMAGE

Regardless, the composition on the first two images is excellent. Yeah, I tend to use AF less and less with landscapes, especially when there is an interesting foreground subject.

It's not black and white. No desaturation, no B/W conversion. That's the light there was that day. Like I said, night and day difference from your shots last weekend. BTW, my shot was also taken in Lincoln City.
