Is it something else that goes "Bzzt"? Or, for that matter, "Ding ding" or "Beep beep"?

It does not generate any sound.

Hint time?
It's QUARTZ.

Quartz as in the name of the company that is now a brand of Evertz (external link)?

Quartz as in it has a quartz crystal inside.

Is the quartz crystal interchangeable?

Is the quartz crystal part of a phase lock loop circuit?

That is quite possible but I'm not sure. It's definitely for the precision of quartz vibration.

Well, that leaves the likelihood that it is either for timing, receiving, or transmitting.

Does the device receive an RF signal of some type?

Phase Lock Loop or sometimes spelled Phase-Locked Loop and abbreviated PLL is basically the more formal name for digital tuning. Older circuits used analog tuning where the circuit was usually tuned by a variable capacitor of one type or another. A PLL circuit is basically standard in anything made in the 2000's that has a tuner. I haven't heard that term in years but when they first came out it was used in the marketing literature of many companies. Now they just call it digital tuning which is basically the same thing.

You have excluded alarm clock. What about normal clock or digital stopwatch?

Not RF...

No, not a clock or stopwatch.

No, I am including all those under timing. There are also many other things you could also include under timing, but those all fall squarely under timing. :p

Does it receive a digital signal or any type of signal at all?
