Tom,

Is it a blue grouse neck display all OOF.

No, that's not it.....but that guess did give me cause to chuckle. I'm glad that others on here know what Blue Grouse neck displays are!

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

OOF fall foliage?

Yes, precisely!
Now you get to post the next "what is it" pic!
Here is what the foliage looked like in focus. For the OOF image, I shot it from the opposite side, so that it was backlit, with direct sunlight coming thru the leaves. I've always thought it was cool how leaves "glow" when light comes thru them.

Good job. I was guessing a field of spring wildflowers.

OK, let's give this a try. Sorry about the slightly iffy quality of the image. I won't give a clue at this stage, other than saying I think it is quite difficult. When anyone gets close I will give clues! Probably not as hard as the WAIN that I have running!

Well, there actually was a dusting of ice crystals but I am after what the basal structure is.

Yes and yes ... the microstructure of the substrate is more or less visible in the ice patterning ...
