Snowy Owl - Late Afternoon Light, New England

Another close encounter with a Snowy Owl on snow. This beautiful female allowed us to get pretty close. This is full frame.

I tell you, I'm a believer of having the right energy and approach. I have no doubt in my mind that animals feel your energy. I witnessed this idiot with a 70-200mm lens rushing to photograph the owl (not this one) several times in one morning and the owl just continued flying away from him.

A calm, slow and submissive approached worked for us many times. So, get low, control your breathing and take your time!

Incredible close up and headshot using some fill flash coming up next!

Canon 1D MKIV, Canon 800mm L @ f/8, 1/1500 sec, ISO 640 in Manual mode.

Thanks!

It all depends on the Owl too. I've been trying to get out every weekend to photograph these and seen all sorts of approaches.
Some owls just fly away, where I've seen as many as 12-15 people all around one at 25 - 50 feet away, and the owl ignores them completly.
I also understand those idiots to a certain extent. They don't think and just want that photograph. At the same time with the equipment they have, there really never going to get close enough, without practically tripping over the bird anyways..
Theres a lot of things going on to get a great image, and sometime it happens, and sometimes it doesn't. A little luck doesn't hurt either.
Gotta love those snowies !

Very nice, Maxis/ At least with your gear you are able to stay a respectful distance away. Since I found one dead near me at home, I have come to be very sensitive to their need for space to allow them to hunt and survive.

Beautiful Maxis. I've gone out a few times to a place they have been spotted but no luck yet.

I have seen several this year (10-12 diff birds) and unfortunately found one last Sunday that was a victim of a bird strike :( .. very young bird it appeared and hope it was quick and did not suffer :(
Good image and great light Maxis ....

Hope to get a few more before the year is up
