you can pickup a nikon 50mm 1.2 for $600-700.. as far as 1.0, you can convert the canon with adapters.
As far as I know, the .95 canon and similar apertures are only for rangefinders.

For zeiss, the 1.2 is only in the anniversary editions, which are very expensive.

folks, the topic is not 'low aperture'...we all should talk about the size of the OPENING, not the magnitude of the number!

f/0.95 is a very large aperture size, not a 'very low (number) aperture'

Very large aperture, fast lenses were made for the days when film ISO were slow and ISO 400 was one of the fastest available. In the days of film, ISO 1250 was about the fastest B&W film you could find, but it was too grainy to be able to get it in 135 size! Ergo, the need for fast lenses.

I did not know that specifically. That does make sense, I was more under the impression that the 'faster' lenses were due to the need to stop action and motion blur rather than a lack of ISO. I guess I never questioned the limitation of the physical film itself.

Here is a thread devoted to the Canon FL 55mm 1.2 https://photography-on-the.net …p?p=13265021#post13265021

You should be able to buy one and add the EdMika mount conversion for about $500 total.

Maybe get a Zuiko 55/1.2 and a chipped adaptor. That should be within your budget.

Thank you for the suggestions. I did not know about the Zuiko lens.
I have read the posts about the FL 55mm and Ed Mika converter.
That seems to be the direction I'll try for the cost.
However the Nikkor AIS 1.2 is about the same price and the adapters on eBay are about $25. It is a close 2nd.

Just play around with the brenizer method. Your 50 1.4, shooting a 14mm equivalent shot should get you a shot that's 14 f/0.4 equivalent. If it's to wide, then 28mm would get you 28 f/0.8. It would be a lot cheaper and will give you shallower DoF than any lens you could buy.

I agree, I have been reading up on the Breinzer Method on this site. I will happily try it when it is warmer outside.
I have been bored here, snowing, and researching wide lenses. I have been debating upgrading my 50 1.4 to the 50L and looking at alternatives.
The EF 1.0 looks like fun, but I like the swirl bokeh of the FL 55mm 1.2 more and more. It looks nothing like the EF 1.2 bokeh.

InfiniteDivide,

You should give it a go inside with your 100L. There's always something to shoot inside and you could see how thin in the DOF department you can go.

Funny, this is exact the site I use as a very bad example for onion bokeh!
I love my DIY converted Minolta Rokkor 58mm f/1.2 (external link). But not everybody gets infinity with this lens on the EOS 5D cameras, probably because not filing down the retaining ring.

I recently picked up a Minolta Rokkor 58mm f/1.2 with a custom EOS mount for a cool $375 and have been enjoying it quite a bit (external link). I don't get infinity focus on my 5D or 6D, but I got it for low-light portraits, so I don't need it.

Just missed out on a used Rokkor 58mm 1.2 on ebay complete with EF adaptor, albeit with a slightly scratched rear element. Went for £165 ($275).

Yeah, the Minolta 58 is a cool fast lens :-)

Found my Canon FD 85/1.2L again, need to redo a part of the conversion to use my smaller mirror in my main manual lens camera.

I like the photos from your 58mm and 85mm Helios lenses much more than the Rokkor lens. Thanks for posting those.
I want a 50L but cannot find one for a decent price used. Only $100-$200 off a brand new one here in Japan, not worth it.
