Version 2 has improved coating for much less flare, is sharper in the corners on the wide end, has a little less CA, has better star burst effect, has slightly better microcontrast, and is weather sealed.
Version 1 may be little better on the 35 end in the corners, and is cheaper. I would certainly not recommend either lens for a T3i, unless you are upgrading to a full frame. I have owned both.

I've used the original 16-35 f/2.8L (77mm filter thread) for years with APS-C format cameras (my retired 20D and my 7D) and have never once had a complaint about its image quality. I've been very happy with it. It's part of a 3-lens team including the original 24-70 f/2.8L and the original 70-200 f/2.8L IS. I've never had any thoughts of trading any of these three lenses for the newer versions.

I've used both these lenses and have found very little if any difference in image quality (in spite of claims that the ver 2 is an improvement). If you're considering getting a ver 1, I don't think you'll be missing anything worth talking about compared to ver 2.

The Version 2 is still a bit soft in the corners i dont wanna imagine how it is on version 1..

But id go with the version 2 its a very good lens else. Center nice sharp a bit much vignetting but nothing which cant be eliminated in PP
