The newish 24 2.8 IS is actually supposed to be very good at a more reasonable price, but at 2.8 it isn't a typical "low light" prime. Personally, I worry 35 and 24 are too close, and would prefer something between the 24 and 14 without breaking the bank with the 17 tse or 21 ze.

Is this a religion? Will you be excommunicated for keeping a zoom?

I personally like a mix of primes and zooms. I keep the zooms around for those times when I need more than one focal length handy and when I don't need an especially fast aperture. I use primes when I need a fast aperture for the most part.

I'd probably just keep the 17-40L if I were you, and that seems like a good match to the 85 and 135 primes. Unless there is some very specific thing you are looking for on the wider end from some specific prime, I'm not sure where getting rid of the 17-40 is a great idea.

I personally own a 24L II which is a great lens for when I want a really fast wide angle (which is a unique look). But there are times when I think my 16-35L II is a better lens, and not even just for the ability to adjust the focal length. The zoom is actually also better at controlling flare in those situations as well.

So.....get what you want and all, but your thinking about a 35mm prime over the 17-40 zoom doesn't seem to be based on any clear rationale.

^^ I'd sort of agree there with the wide end.

I have 50/1.4 & 135L which suit me fine for most things in general. I have a 100/2.8 macro covered in dust somewhere & then the 17-40L which I use solely for land/seascapes really. I can't personally think of a prime to replace the 17-40L without spending silly money.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions guys. I think I'm going to start off with getting the 35 on the wide end, and if I see that I want something wider, I'm going to go with a 24mm. I just wish there was a 24mm mot as expensive as Canons L but on par with sigmas 35. Unless I wanna go really wide and cover that with a rokinon 14mm. I guess as I complete the kit, time will tell. As far as the 85 goes, I'm really going to try to keep the sigma and maybe just save a little more to get the 35. Everything that you guys said has been thought about and taken into account.

So the search for the 35 continues!

Didn't Rokinon/Samyang come out with a 24mm f/1.4 all manual lens? I could swear I remember someone coming out with one. But it could be a tilt shift lens I am thinking of.
