Frankly, even a Pulitzer Prize winning photographer is only a freelancer...hehehe.... :) If AP is that strict, hand him a M3 and done with. With the way the photography industry is heading, it is hard to take any of these seriously. I think he is better off to focus on other photography discipline than being a Pulitzer Prize freelancer photographer.

What other photos has that photographer altered? Could be countless of photos. Do you realise the dangers of altering photos can do in regards to photojournalism? Wars have been started over a dodgy dossier, if photographers are going to alter images, that could accidentally cause problems. Please don't say I'm over-reacting, wars are serious things

Hilarious. It's not the writer or the editor. It's the dude that photoshops the camera out of his picture that starts a war.

In other news:

Janitor fired from Enron for stealing a pen: "Enron's reputation is paramount and we react decisively and vigorously when it is tarnished by actions in violation of our ethics code"

A man has an obligation to stick to the rules, even if his superiors, actually or presumably, do not.

so if the camera had been say 2 feet further to the left and the shot just a bit wider. he could've cropped it out and been ok.

or heck just lopped of the bottom 3rd (i understand the composition would look pretty crummy)

I get it, rules are rules.

I guess that's why i'll just stick to taking photos for kicks and giggles and my own personal enjoyment

There has to be a bright and shining line about cloning. And its not just a rule for rules sake. Its about the credibility of the system, because once that's gone it doesn't come back. Cloning out a camera on the ground that could have been cropped had it been framed differently seems a minor sin, but if you dont draw a line somewhere then you run the risk of the slippery slope. There was a shooter who during one of the middle east conflicts a few years back who pasted in a few extra bodies from another shot to create a new scene that didnt exist. The bodies were from only a few feet away but didnt reflect the reality of the shot. The photographer created something that didnt exist. There has to be a strong policy to keep any sort of digital altering of images (not color correction, cropping, or contrast, exposure fixes) or faith in the system will collapse.

He created a composition that didn't exist. If the bodies were a few feet away, the meaning is the same. Collages are created with images shot at different time points in the same war zones. And yet, there's no disclaimers.

What about video editing? Screwing around with space time continuum?

What difference does it make if he is on staff or a freelancer with regards to the Pulitzer?

I think the implication is that there's no staff jobs for photographers any moar

Perhaps, but the comment doesn't make sense to me - I doubt AP would have a bureau in every country in the world, much less staff photogs.

When was the last time you saw a collage presented as a single shot on the front page of the newspaper?

If they did, the guy in Liechtenstein wouldn't have much to do.

I don't know.

I've never seen a collage that looks like a single shot anywhere. It looks like a collage.

So a collection of single images. Obvious as a collection of individual images each telling its own story, perhaps telling a story as a collective, but not blended.
