Caught this Sharp-Shinned Hawk dining on a fresh startling it just caught. I've never managed to get this close to one before, this was literally 20 feet away from me.

Edit: Others in the know state that this is a Coopers Hawk. Like I said, I was going by his chest markings and seeing what pictures Google brought up to identify it. Either way, it was definitely a great moment for me and I was glad I was able to capture it in it's natural element.

Great shots! I think you mean "shinned" though! ;)

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

He does look like one, so I could be wrong. I'm going by the pattern on his chest.

They say that Coopers have a cap on their head and rounded tail feathers, when perched. Sharp Shinned has a square tail with a continued head colour blending to the back…hey nice pic either way...

This is the other side. Obviously not a great shot due to all the branches, but shows his back.

Here's one in my front yard a few weeks ago standing on a collared dove. The pic was taken through my living room window with my 100-400L. Heavily cropped.

It is a Cooper's hawk, like others have pointed out, but very nice shot either way : )
