This was my first real attempt at shooting any kind of bird in flight.
I was in failing light but tried my best....sure a steep learning curve I can tell.

Heya,

Shutter down to 1000s or 2000s. Take ISO up. Stop down the aperture.

Otherwise, you're getting there.

Very best,

For some reason my 7D causes a ton of noise especially in the blue sky at anything over 160.

You should not have tons of noise over iso160, usually it's a under exposure problem, and of course crop, crop, cropping. Try using av mode, and give your exposure comp,a click to,the right.

Very good attempt ken. Great advice given and to follow. Blue sky causes noise problems with any camera. A better exposure helps. You can fix the noise in the sky with Lightroom or Photoshop through selective corrections (masking).

I shoot at f/5.6, ISO 400 and ss of 1/2000. With your lens you could shoot at f/4 or even f/2.8 and should be able to keep your ISO at 200 or less.
