Which new lens to have some fun?

Hi folks
I have a strange question...I generally shoot wildlife with long lenses and am currently suffering from bilateral tendonitis in my arms/elbows. I am looking for a new toy that is not too heavy! I shoot with a 5D mlll and was thinking of a fisheye? (I love shooting insects and have the 100 f2.8 ISL. ) Would a fisheye be a fairly light lens to have fun with or is it too specific? I do enjoy close up work with a wide-angle but have never tried fisheye.
Any other suggestions? Going nuts not being able to hold my 400!

thanks
NJ

wrong sub-forum, but a fisheye IS a bit too specific.
However it's a fun lens. The 8-15mm would allow you more play flexibility, but I would recommend you rent a specific lens first.
TS-e lenses are a whole new world to consider too.
Another option, would be getting a lensbaby system. No replacement of good quality lenses, but relatively inexpensive for how versatile the system is, and indeed would allow you to explore w/ different effects/disciplines/subjects

you could buy the inexpensive rokkinon 14mm 2.8.

been enjoying shooting wide-angle myself (25mm) and enjoy getting close to get the shot.

Thanks folks. Sorry. I thought "general" talk was the place to post...Equipment better? I was focused on the "fun" part. :-)

I was just looking at the lensbaby...and a general WA like a 17.The TS-e was just a little too pricey...
and as for renting, I am traveling for a month, so by the time I rent, I may as well buy!

I will repost in equipment. thanks for that.

The fisheye is a one trick pony. Its a cool trick. But its not too many shots in that you realize that all your shots look alike and there isnt much you can do about it.

NJ,

I own the 8-15L and consider it to be a very specific lens. In my opinion though, it's not quite a one-trick pony if you take the time to really analyze your scene and carefully think through your compositions. So yes, it can be fun because it challenges you if you want to create really intriguing images. But if you get lazy with it, then yes, all of your images will start to look the same. (I am not saying this towards Gonzogolf at all. I'm just pointing out that most photographers, myself included, have a tendency to get lazy with this lens.)

Too bad the TS-E 24 isn't in your price range. I just added one to my lens bag and it will keep me challenged for months! Yes, they are expensive. But my oh my...they give you tons of creative control!

I'm not saying you cant use it skillfully. But show a full gallery full of ultra wide shots to a room full of people and the novelty of the fisheye wears off quickly.

Oh yea, I definitely understand what you're saying. It certainly is a specialized lens...but a fun one, especially for action shots where you want to immerse the viewer into the scene.

You have a good point though -- one must judiciously choose the images they want to display when using this lens!

The only for the fisheye is to illustrate the fisheye effect in the photo books. (c) Forgotten ;)

Why is a 50 or 35mm not fun?

Oldish MF lenses are light. A few MF lenses, long and wide, with EOS mount adapters, reverse mounted wide on long, will let you shoot and experiment macro with the combos.

Normal fisheye lenses are not that great for macro images. MOD too long, and normal extension tubes too thick. With M42 lens and tubes it is possible.

Whats about a Meyer Trioplan 100 (external link)? It is light, it makes very different images, opened a new world for me.
It is easy to use with the normal focussing screen, cause it has f/2.8
And at the moment it is a good investment :)

Sigma 12-24?

I have the 8-16 on my 60D which gives the same FOV on the 5DIII as the 12-24.

I'm having fun with it!
