OK, I'm still in the learning stages with Lightroom 5, but am starting to get pretty comfortable with it (or so I thought). I'm going through some old photos to see what I can do with them in Lightroom, and have one where under the "basic" tab are "Exposure / Recovery / Fill Light / Blacks / Brightness / Contrast". With every other photo I see "Exposure / Contrast / Highlights / Shadows / Whites / Blacks". These are all '.crw' raw files which I shot with a Canon Rebel 300D several years ago. What am I missing?

It's about the different process versions.

Look at one of the old files (in the develop module) and you may see an exclamation mark icon.(bottom right of the view).

Click this and, when prompted, choose the 2012 Process.

This will then give you the whites/blacks sliders etc.

Was the older photo processed with an earlier version of LR.

With the photo selected, go down to Camera Calibration and check the Version date. If it is an older version date, change it to the latest.

That was in LR4. In LR5 it is a zigzagy lighting bolt sort of icon just under the right side of the histogram.

Wow, that was strange. Changing to the latest version under camera calibration did the trick, but no, none of these were ever touched with Lightroom before. I've only had Lightroom on my computer for a little over a week now and am just now getting around to looking at some of these old files to see what I can do with them.

LR is reading the .xml files from previous ACR edits.

As above, LR thinks these older images were previously edited using an earlier version of LR with a different processing engine (maybe you used ACR in Photoshop/Photoshop Elements?)

The reason for the warning is that changing between processed can, in some cases, have a dramatic effect on the image processing. If you are happy with the old image you may not actually want to update it. In fact Adobe did issue a warning at one point that it is probably better to only update individual images that you actually want to revisit/reprocess.

Shucks, now that's something for which I just might pay the upgrade price. :D

OK, I think I know what happened then. I believe I might have opened this one particular file with Photoshop CS2 quite a while ago after CS2 was released for free download.

Cool.... I learned something today. (Do I get a t-shirt? )

(Do I get a t-shirt? )

That's only in the UK. However, Americans do get free instructions on how to do the secret handshake. Contact Adobe.
