Those who are convinced of the ultimate superiority of Sony imaging sensors and the benefits of "full frame" no longer need to complain about Canon cameras.

The upgrade of their dreams has finally arrived. Phase One has announced the IQ250. (external link) This ultimate digital unit offers 50MP resolution, far more than any DSLR. It has a Sony imager which is much larger than anything ever placed in a DSLR, whether full frame or crop. This is everything that hard-core camera enthusiasts have wanted.

Now, using this ultimate unit is going to require some changes. The IQ 250 is a medium format digital back. Using one requires switching to Phase One's Mamiya 645-based medium format camera bodies (external link) and the associated lenses. (external link)

The IQ250 back will cost US $35,000, and since no DSLR lens can cover a medium format imaging areas, this upgrade will require additional expense to replace lenses.

However, now that a camera system has arrived that solves every shortcoming of Canon DSLR's, there should be an immediate and permanent rush away from the inferior Canon system.

Who's going to be the first one to switch to a superior camera?

Should say the ultimate digital imaging tool for really demanding work and clients. The question should be who has the client base to support it? And if thats not your client base and you are doing this for a living, how do I get those clients? This is not a toy and for most that have toys this is way out of their grasp.

That's one sweet camera for sure. :)

But I've already covered Canon's shortcomings with the A7R. And I didn't have to sell my car to afford it.

If this was a full frame back I would possibly consider swapping to the new IQ250, but the 1.3x crop factor makes it a no go for me.

I think the ISO and crop factor would benefit Loaction shoots and studio not have a DOF as narrow as a full size sensor would give. Sounds like it beats out the D800 at HIGH ISO!!!!!!

Fortunately 99.99% of my work stays at ISO 100, or in this case 50.

As for the link, lack of noise looks pretty good, the least they could have done was post photos which were in focus.

Agreed, even most professional photographers rent these as they are way too expensive.

The shot they posted at 1600 I wouldn't consider usable.

The noise on that file is easily useable on print. I can see having 3200 prints done into magazines with ease. Sizing down to a 14" from a 34" or whatever native is on that camera will make it pretty good I would bet. It does look on Par with my D800e as far as noise. That is saying something if a MF size sensor is getting that clean. The 260 I shot with was HORRID at 400iso.....

not sure you looked at the images, but even their iso 100 shot is soft......

noise is controlled well for MF, but the images are just soft.

I can't find specs as to whether this new sensor is 16 bit or not. Comparing to CCD equipped Phase backs (P45+ in my case), the color-fidelity and acutance just isn't there.
