Just bought a 70D and can't wait to open the box when it gets delivers next week.Just been told that it doesn't have a selection of different white balances to choose from.I take it that it is good enough on AWB, or do you shoot on custom.

Don't know where you got that information from but it's wrong.

White Balance

Settings
Auto, Preset (Daylight; Shade; Cloudy, Twilight, Sunset; Tungsten light; White Fluorescent Light; Flash), Custom (Approx. 2,000° - 10,000°K), Color Temperature (Approx. 2,500° - 10,000°K)

It has presets. AWB is great outdoors and canon is improving their AWB for indoor lighting on newer models, but inside its still better to use a custom WB.

In advance of the arrival, you can get the manuals at http://www.usa.canon.com …s_70d#BrochuresAndManuals (external link).

Go into the settings.
There is obviously Auto WB, which is fine if you shoot RAW and do your own post processing.
There are the usual "presets" such as sunny, cloudy, tungsten etc..
Or there is the Custom setting.

Whoever told you it doesn't have a selection of WB option is balking tollocks.

Anything anybody tells you is wrong, including this.

What it does not have is a direct access button for WB. You can use the Q-menu, or dig through the menu system. Rest assured, the 70D does have WB settings.

I think WB is one thing to get right in-camera, if possible. Buy an 18% grey card. I shoot raw, but primarily for noise control, shadow detail, recoverable highlights and lens profile vignetting adjustments. Those are easy to fix, and can be done to taste. If you don't get WB right in-camera, you are just guessing.

Balderdash.

There is zero difference between using your greycard to set a custom white balance before shooting and using the exact same greycard to set the white balance in post-processing. Well, except that the second method is easier and takes less time and effort.

Besides, using a greycard for a custom WB can only give you an accurate WB. However, it is very common for an accurate WB to be different from the correct WB.
