Tamron 70-300 Tele-Macro issues

Same new guy, different question.

A buddy of mine had this lens laying around and gave it to me. Seems like a decent lens but the issue I am having is it will not extend anywhere from 70-300mm. Doesn't matter if it is in AF or M. Is this a common problem? Any idea how to fix other than taking to shop?

Is there a zoom "lock" switch on it?

You're not thinking that some button on the camera causes the lens to zoom are you?

You must zoom by hand by turning the zoom ring.
