Thanks!

I was in the Keech Tower grandstand on the front stretch just past the end of pit road where the cars turn into the infield course from the oval.

Most of these are uncropped. I shot them with my Canon 400 5.5 L on my 7d. Shot at 5.6 at 1/1600 handheld. I panned to follow the cars.

There's really no point in panning at 1/1600th. They all look parked on the track.

Helps frame fast moving objects.

whiteknight is implying a more advanced method of panning knowing as motion panning.
The premise is to move your lens the same speed as your subject so that it compensates to allow for a slower shutter speed, thus blurring the unwanted background and leaving the subject sharp.

these are nice except some would be best with a motion panning perspective.

Motion panning is ok as a special effect if you like it. Gets old if done on every shot.

Same thing with bokeh. Bokeh is often over done today. I actually prefer crisp clear shots. I don't think you can say one better than the other.

Yeah, that happened a little after I left. Sun was going down and wife was getting cold. It was a little cool (for Florida).

You're entitled to your opinion, but what shooting at such a high shutter speed does is to "freeze" everything. Including the wheels. The cars may as well be parked there, on the track. To me (and to many), it does not make for a compelling race photo.

I'm mainly here for the snacks

Blurred backgrounds and wheels are an interesting artistic effect but can be overdone if used all the time. Certainly not an accurate reproduction of what one would see at the track. Unless one was drinking heavily ;)

Again, your photos make the cars appear to be parked on the track. The "artistic effect" called panning conveys movement, which is exactly what you see on the track. Next time you're at a race, try counting the number of spokes on any given car's wheels as it is moving.

Your opinion not mine. I have been to too many races to count going back several decades and I never recall the scenery behind the cars being blurred like many of the motion panning automotive shots you see.

Gets to be a cliche when overdone.
