I purchased a refurbished Canon AE-1P last night through eBay, kept looking around and found this "chrome" lens (external link)..

I cannot find it anywhere else on the internet, searching the name yields a non-chrome lens..

What is this lens?!

Well, WikiPedia (external link) does mention chrome versions of this lens and cites this page (external link). I imagine that this is one of the "chrome nose" lenses. Which are also radioactive, apparently. You might want to read that page. :)

The seller also has a 50mm 1.5 in chrome as well (not chrome nosed, but chromed body). He also has a regular black 50mm 1.8 with a chromed metal hood. Looking at his sold items, there is a chromed Spiratone, and he previously sold another 35/2 that was chrome. I also noticed that every one of his lenses have perfect, fresh , colorful lettering.

My guess? He gets lenses, and refurbishes them to look pretty and cool. He most likely does the chrome plating himself.

In other words, he's selling a prettied-up 35/2 for 3 times it's value.

That means you're right, he takes apart the lenses, chrome plates (or replicates plastic parts with metal), and adds the ink to markings..

I wouldn't buy from him either..

I was curious because the lens looks so darn good, but I didn't find any chrome-body lens anywhere else.

Now we know :)

He has had 2 out of 380 over the past year that were negative, for an eBay seller that is pretty darn good.

Hmm. I'm zero negatives for 15 years (Jan 16, 1999), with total at 1434, 193 this last year (and that's not including the 245 buyers that didn't leave feedback).

It's not the fact that he got a negative, it's what the negative had to say - retouched photos - and I kind of believe that, or at least 'enhanced'.

Heya,

Why worry about what the lens looks like?

I'd worry what it looks like when looking through the lens. And only that.

Very best,

That is a pretty common excuse used by disgruntled buyers. It forms a basis for a dispute about to be filed for "not as described". In any case it doesn't matter. If you wanted to buy a chromed lens for more than the lens is worth, then it is a good buy. Else not...

If the images are actually retouched to remove scratches, that is a big deal and worth of a not as described....

A lot to assume from one feedback out of hundreds... Why does it matter though? Who here is really considering buying one of those lenses anyways?

Who is considering buying it is irrelevant. The question is how much you can gleam from this one negative comment. In this case it's chrome, and if you're buying chrome you give an enormous damn about looks. Most people don't give two ****s about looks, so I can believe a lot of people would never notice minor scratching. On the other hand, it's one comment. It would make me reduce my max bid, but I'd still bid on it.
