Haven't put much basketball up here in a while so here is some recent stuff of mine. A lot of this was done with my new Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC. Thinking about doing a full write up for using the lens during sports but so far I am very impressed with it's performance during basketball.

My arena is not the best lit arena out there, but not horrible either. The Tamron held it's own and produced very sharp and usable images on my 60D at ISO's between 2000 - 3200.

On to the photos, as always C&C is welcome.

Drew

Nice!

You are the person I've been wanting to talk to. :-)

I was looking at the Tamron 24-70 or getting a used Canon 24-70 version I (can't afford the version II) for basketball. I was concerned about whether the AF of the Tamron was fast enough for the action.

I'm interested in a write up. How is the AF? Fast enough?

Thanks for any response.

Drew, I'm really impressed by the images you get out of that 60D. These images prove that it's the photographer not the equipment. Good work.

BTW, Like the tip off shot.

I really appreciate the comment. I am a firm believer in make the best with what you have and my 60D has never let me down in any regards. It takes more work to time the shots and be smart about focusing with the slower fps and af but I've gotten pretty good with it.

And thank you for saying the tip off shot is good, I had to fight to get that in the sports section as the editor said it didn't show as much "action" but we lost and it was good to just say hey, "this game happened"

I got it and replied. Thank you, very much.

I had to shoot a couple whole games with just a Sigma 17-50 F2.8 OS when my Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS was being repaired by Canon (took three trips but it seems to be like brand new now). I really like that Sigma lens even though it doesn't have much reach. That's one reason I'm looking at the 24-70 to go along with my 70-200. I think I'm going to rent one for a couple of games in Feb and give it a try.

Below, just a couple of shots with the Sigma. Not great but I'm learning.

Off to a good start. It is nice to complement your 70-200 with a 24-70. Great for me anyways and the range is basketball gives me enough for guys shooting 3 pointers and wide enough for stuff under the basket.

My 70-200 I shoot at 2.8, for the 24-70 I shoot at 3.2 due to it being a little soft at 70mm when at 2.8. My 70-200 is real sharp at 2.8 so thats a little different.

Drew,

Great shots. I noticed that you were able to shoot at 1/500 @ 3.2 and 2500 ISO. I can't seem to get anywhere close to that in our HS Gym with my 60d so the lighting must be quite a bit worse.

Are you doing your post processing in Light Room. Can you suggest some sharpening and noise reduction settings?

Thanks,

Aaron

Yea our arena is pretty decent as far as lighting goes. For PP I do very minimal noise reduction with them. The 60D handles noise very well when you ETTR for it.

I rented the Tamron 24-70 f 2.8 just to try it out for a couple of games. The AF is definitely fast enough.
