I have a friend who is going on a bucket list trip. He wants a small camera, but a good one. It should be fairly simple to operate as he and his wife are smart but not tech friendly. It doesnt have to be canon. I am at a loss as to what to recommend since I stick to the DSLR world.

Small as in pocket sized? How about the Canon S120? Amazon has it for $399.00. It's a very versatile camera. Also has a wide enough lens, 24mm on the wide end, for those landscape shots.

Thats on the list of models that I've researched. As for size I'm kind of guessing but staying within the point and shoot realm. I dont think they are ready for mirrorless or some other variation.

I'd say one of the baby Canons, too. If your friend isn't overly fussy on image quality, then even one of the older models will do the trick - and they still give good photos, just not AS good (most people sharing via computer and small prints can't tell).

I recently took the Sony RX100 on my trip to Italy instead of my dslr and didn't regret it at all. The Sony has some nigglies that turn me off, but I can't fault the quality of the images or the lower light capabilities. It's almost small enough for me to love (but secretly I long for something smaller for a grab & go camera).

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LF1 might be a good option, too.
