Canon 70D changing color space by itself

I am a long time professional user and have owned a long list of Canon EOS dSLRs. Just bought a 70D and love this camera, but it is doing something I have not seen before.

During a shoot, I always set color space via the menu to Adobe RGB. But I am noticing that somewhere during the shoot, file names change from IMG_xxx to _MG_xxxx, and that the color space changes too. I have seen this randomly before on other bodies and never really tuned into the fact that the color space is also changing. I prefer Adobe RGB because I post in Photoshop converting to CMYK for print and like the wider gamut.

Any help would be appreciated. I just need to lock down the color space for all eternity so it does not change during a shoot.

Are you shooting raw? If so your color space in camera doesnt matter.

Gonzogolf, sorry, should have specified...shooting JPEG. And please don't make this a RAW vs JPEG discussion...I know the benefits and pitfalls of each...JPEG just suits my workflow better.

Thanks for not going there. That seems to be what happens on here...but I appreciate your reply. Any idea why this changes automatically? I usually shoot on Tv or Av, never int he creative modes, but I just saw that the "C" creative mode changes the space to sRGB. But using INFO button in Tv or Av, space says Adobe RGB.

C is not a creative mode but a custom mode, so you can set it however you like. I have no idea why its changing. As for the debate. There is a reason it often goes there, but you dont want to hear it.

Shows you what I know about the other modes beyond Tv, Av and M. I never ever use them since my first Canon dSLR. But the changing color space thing is a brain bender...

Are you changing back and forth between the "C" mode and Tv ? If so, then this is the reason that the color space is changing because cs must be set separately and it is remembered in the "C" mode and can be different from the other modes.

BTW _MG_xxxx is the filename type for Adobe RGB and IMG_xxxx is the file name type for sRGB.

The C mode is there for when you want to preprogram a particular shot. For instance you are shooting a wedding but you know at some point in the day you will need to take a particular shot that will require you to change ISO, and other things. By setting up the C mode, you can easily switch between without going to the effort of changing the primary mode you have been working in.

From Dave Busch's 70D guide. I've added bold to some comments that may be applicable.

When you are using one of the Creative Zone modes, you can select one of two different color spaces, which define a specific set of colors that can be applied to the images your 70D captures. The Color Space menu choice applies directly to JPEG images shot using Creative Zone exposure modes (P, Tv, Av, M, and A-DEP). When you’re using Basic Zone modes, the 70D uses the sRGB color space for all the JPEG images you take. RAW images are a special case. They have the information for both sRGB and Adobe RGB, but when you load such photos into your image editor, it will default to sRGB (with Basic Zone shots) or the color space specified here (for Creative Zone pictures) unless you change that setting while importing the photos.

So, is there possibility that your image editor gives you the impression color space is changing or is the change actually being indicated at the camera menu level?

I am not familiar with the 70D, but in the cameras that I do know the C mode has a "gotcha". If you make some change to your camera settings while in C, when the camera goes to sleep and then wakes up it reverts to the registered settings. So if for instance the camera was in sRGB when you set up the C and then while in C you change it to Adobe RGB, if you pause in your shooting and it sleeps, it switches back to sRGB. It is a problem because the only solution is to cancel sleeping, which empties the battery faster. But it been a few years since I bought a new camera and maybe things have changed.

That is from an actual publication? It is absolute BS! An absolutely false explanation of color space and totally untrue description of Raw.

Besides, the OP noted that he was aware of the change in space because he saw that the file naming convention was changing. In Canon cameras sRGB files are named IMG_xxxx and Adobe RGB files are _MG_xxxx. I don't suppose the editor is renaming the files.

If you shoot raw, what color space should you use when it is out into Lightroom?

Not sure what you mean Frodge, when shooting in RAW no color space is defined. Do you mean when exporting out of Lightroom?
