The Tripod Thread?

I was hoping to find a general thread about tripods, but couldn't find one... so I thought I might start one!

Anyway, my old cheapo tripod has shuffled off its mortal coil - or rather a thread has been stripped and it's now useless. It's time to buy a new tripod.

There is a huge range of tripods out there, from about £15 to... well, as high as you might want to go.

What should I be looking for when I try to select a new tripod? Why would I want a replaceable head? How can I judge which tripods are sufficient to hold the weight of a 5DII? Are there quick release tripods? How do I find a tripod where the camera attaching device is small enough that I can leave it on the camera all the time without it getting in my way?

If there is a good site or thread where these questions would be answered, please point me to it, if not then any input you can offer would be appreciated.
