Sorry, I've never been and don't know much about Vietnam. I'm sure you can search "Vietnam" here on the forums and find some ideas. The one place in Vietnam that I've always wanted to visit (and hopefully will someday) is Halong Bay.

I was in Vietnam in October and loved it.
I think possibly the most photogenic part of the country would have to be Sapa, just google image search it to see what I mean, it's famous for its picturesque terraced rice fields. Ironically that was the one place we didn't go! Halong Bay is amazing, though the weather wasn't great when we were there, can't control that though!
Hoi An is a beautiful town that is both great to visit and take pictures, the capital Hanoi is also really cool. I didn't think too much of Ho Chi Minh city though.
That reminds me, I really should post my Halong bay images to my blog!

I've been to Vietnam a few times. The most memorable places for me are Sapa in the far north west. Wonderful scenery and colourful ethnic groups. Halong Bay just because it's Halong bay, beautiful spot actually. Hue, great architecture, check out the Citadel and do a cruise down the Perfume River. If you're into street photography, the Old Quarter of Ha Noi. Some very interesting characters there.
