First Full Frame Camera For Me

I currently shoot a 40D with a Tamron 17-50 (non vc) and I would like to move to a full frame camera within the next 3 months. I have been checking out the 6D as the first choice because of its great low light performance and price. I mostly shoot nightlife, weddings and models (you can check out my Flickr and my website for examples so you can see what I shoot.)

I also would like to know what lens should I get to replace the Tamron that will be around the same zoom range to go with the full frame 6D. I *was* looking at the Canon 17-40L but I would be losing the f2.8 capabilities and the extra 10mm.

Another reason I was looking closely at the 6D was because of the fact that it can shoot video as well and I would like for my first FF camera to be able to do so.

Is the 6D a good choice as my first move into full frame? And if so, what lenses should I get and again, keeping the Tamron 17-50mm range in mind.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I believe a 24-70 on a 6D will be pretty comparable to the 17-50 on your 40D, so that's what I would recommend. I think the 6D will be a good choice.

I agree with Ben, the 24-70 f 4 will be closest to what your use to. If you can get the 24-70 2.8 mk II even faster and thinner DOF
I recommend the 40mm stm, I shoot a lot of street and nightlife myself and I am amazed at what it can do for $150.
The 24L and the 40mm are my most used lenses. But my 100L is a very close third, great for street candids and portraits.

6d with even tamron 24-70mm f2.8 OS would be nice.

I use a 6D with Tamron 24-70VC and it's very similar to the 17-50.

I shoot with both a 40D and a 5Dc. It doesn't get a lot of love on these forums, but my normal go-to setup is my 5Dc with a Canon 24-105 f/4L IS. Sure, it is a compromise but I do love its versatility and range on full frame. Price-wise I feel it is also a good deal.

As for portraits, again the 5Dc but with my 85 f/1.8 is absolutely amazing.

If you have the cash, I really recommend the 24-70 2.8 II. It is an expensive lens, but you will not regret your decision to buy it. Its great on a 6D. If you dont want to spend so much, the F4 version is also a great lens.

I just got myself a 6D and all I can say is: 6D + 85 f/1.8 = <3

So far it is an amazing portrait set up, however, 85 is too long for events. I just got a 24-105 for that reason, it is a really versatile zoom range and decent aperture for shooting my schools events. But, if you need the 2.8 the older 24-70 is good if you want to save some $ over the new one...or the Tamron 24-70 VC which is neck and neck with the new canon 24-70 II.

For night events, models and portrait, go for 6D+24-70 F2.8 II.

The mk2 version is significantly sharper than the mk1.

All I can say is that the 6D + 24-70 Mk II = utter fabulosity!

Couple of shots from the combo (not nightlift, models or weddings though):

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Thanks a lot you guys for the advice and help but I had one more question:

If the 24-70 on a 6D will match what the 17-50 does on my 40D, what lens should I get if I were to need something wider? For example, I was going to get the Canon 10-22 for my 40D because I needed something wider than the 17-50.

Cheers!

Don't know too much about other manufacturers, but on the Canon side, 17-40L if f/4 will suffice, or 16-35 if you need f/2.8 and have deeper pockets. Or get the Rokinon man focus 14/2.8, on sale for $275 at the eBay Buydig store.

I would consider the 24-105L f4 also. It was my favourite lens. The lens is 1 stop slower than the tamromn but your 6d will make up for that it ISO performance. due positioning and fov etc the f4 should render bokeh on the ff similar to what the tamron does on the 40d. Its super fast at focusing and the focal range very useful. Just a thought
