i shoot with a 5d2, its just too big and bulky to carry everywhere especially travel.

i want to pick up a smaller compact. im looking at the Sony RX100II. is there a better camera in this price range that can do more?

im looking for pretty good light performance and portable i just want something that is going to take really good candid and still let me get a bit creative.

I'm not replacing my 5d2, but i really need something portable with stellar IQ and not spend a small fortune.

I really like my SL1, but I'm a viewfinder guy. With the pancake, great combo.

Consider the Canon PowerShot G16. (external link)

good lord there is a lot of these to consider... i didn't even know about that one.

i like the 1.8-2.8 aperture, the sony doesnt have that... plus its a few bills cheaper...

Fuji X100s (not pocketable, but much more portable). 5D2 was my primary camera until I got into Fuji.

If you're okay with fixed focal length, Ricoh GR.

Your gear list implies that you enjoy your primes. I use my Fuji x100 as a pocket camera (I have large pockets) for events I don't want to lug my 6d. As for the choice between g16 and Sony Rx100 II, the g16 has a smaller sensor and less MP but a wider zoom range. The RX100 is much more pocketable.

The choice is completely dependent on what you plan to use your compact for. But heed my warning: If you do pickup the x100/100s and find out that you need the zoom, you'll almost definitely keep it and pick up another camera.

If you don't mind the 4/3 sensor (slighty smaller then aps-c but quite a bit larger then any other camer its size) the the Panasonic gm1 is rather tiny.

You might not be able to get the Fuji X100s in a pair of skinny pant pockets (I wear normal pants so that doesn't bother me), but the Fuji is made for portability. Just get it. You'll fall in love with it. It truly is a joy to make images with.

p.s. I got a used X100 for a take everywhere camera to supplement my 5D. Almost the best photography investment I've made (85L being #1).

Canon EOS M, cheaper than the RX 100. Bigger sensor , fantastic in low light. Best of all its part of the EOS line so it can take your DSLR lenses with an adapter. It's tiny also with the 22mm 2.0 kit lens, which is a real gem.
