Taken today at a snow mobile museum. Unfortunately there was other stuff below so I couldn't get the entire sled but I still liked the composition.

Thoughts?

Well, I imagine at a museum you were probably extremely limited in how close you could get to the exhibits, so I don't know that you could have taken this shot any differently. That being said, it's probably about the only angle anyone could get of this sled, but it's not very compositionally interesting.

If you had complete access how would you have framed it? Just curious. Thanks!

Well, rather than repeat myself for the hundredth time, I'll post a link to a couple of threads on this forum where I explained exactly what I mean and I gave examples using my own work to demonstrate what I was trying to explain. It may not all seem to apply to your sled-but trust me, I have parts in my comment where I address items just like your sled-so just keep reading. If you read my comments in these links and still want more specific answers, then I'll be happy to give them. ;-)a

A couple of things: first, since we have Elvis-O-Rama, the Tupperware Museum, The Boll Weevil Monument, and Cranberry World, The Shuffleboard Hall Of Fame, Poodle Dog Rock, and The Mecca of Albino Squirrels, ghost towns, theme parks, wax museums, and a place where you can drive through the middle of a tree, alligator farms and tarantula ranches, then I suppose there’s room for a Snowmobile Museum too. Why not?

Second, I am clearly not seeing what you are - Since you mentioned the inability to include the bottom, I won’t hold that against it, and I will just comment on what is presented: I see an nice red on the steering wheel - appealing, easy to look at; some texture on the wood that reminds me of a re-purposed pallet - neutral to look at; and some of the most hideous wall texture I have ever seen. Also, there is not much tonal range and overall, I have to say that I am not seeing the “composition” that you like.

So, let me in on what you see. What do you like about it? What is in your mind when you say that you like the composition?

I think the sled as a subject has great potential. There's history, patterns in the wood, the rusty steel tie-rods, the red steering wheel, the rusty screws.

Unfortunately, the background takes just about everything away from the picture. The background color doesn't provide enough contrast to give good separation from the subject. The distance from the subject to the wall doesn't allow you to work the bokeh.

You have a great eye for finding the sled as a subject, the environment that you were stuck with leaves me a bit flat.

Now, if it was perched atop a hill with Hobbes the Tiger on it, we'd have a whole new story.

Thanks for sharing your work.

Hey, EASY there on the "wall texture" comments; I have textured walls all over my house and some of it looks just like this. Some of it's smooth and some of it's rough...like if you rub your hand across it, it would take a few layers of skin off. And in all honesty, I couldn't agree with you more. What idiot thought textured walls was a good idea and looked nice? Oh well, at least I also have the cool textured ceilings to match it...you know, so my house looks uniformly tacky. ;-)a
