Pelican 1514 Padlock Won't Fit (what should I do?)

I purchased 2 very heavy duty padlocks for my case thinking that they were 5/16" in diameter... but they ended up being bigger and will not fit.

My goal is to lock it up and chain it to our car in the back.

Do you think I would be better off removing the metal clips and drilling the holes to make them larger? OR should I just buy smaller locks?

I looked into master lock.... but every lock at the store were keyed the same.. so I am avoiding masterlock.

Do you know of any good locks that will fit the maximum size of the pelican holes (5/16")?. I want something that is more than just hardened steel. Preferably an anti-drill plate as well.

So many locks do not advertise the diameter and it is really annoying...

I am looking at these (external link), but again, they do not list the diameter...

I think Medeco makes a few that might fit.

Call a locksmith (or go to a lock shop). Avoid the big box stores and don't waste your time online. Talk to a professional. Bring the case. Your gear is worth an hour of your time.

I think I will go ahead and do that. Thank you!

insure your equipment... the chances that a lock would prevent a thief with time to break in are about ... none. I think that you are trying to prevent a smash and grab in which case a smaller diameter lock would work fine.

I do exactly what your trying to do. I chain my pelican case to a hard point in my car trunk using a chain and two master locks #3. Works great.

padlocks only stop the (reasonably) honest people, and they are just a speed hump for thieves...
if they want in, they will get in
buy smaller padlocks, chain it down, check your insurance cover, be vigilant - but mostly, be covert when accessing the pelican so as not to advertise it and its contents

I am insured. I just get uncomfortable leaving anything in my car without any protection (even though it is insured). This will at least give me some piece of mind to feel comfortable going into a restaurant or something.

Yes, my main concern is smash and grab. My fear is one day that someone will break into my car to see what is in the glovebox, center console, take the radio, etc. Then be like "oh look... a Pelican case"... I do not plan on having issues with people breaking in with the intent of taking it, since I do not plan on letting anyone be aware that it is in there. I will stop off well before my location to remove gear I need. I will only be using the lock and chain to keep it in the car while I run into the store really quick or get something to eat. I don't ever park in places I feel uncomfortable and I am always watching my surroundings. I am insured, but I still do not want to deal with the feeling of being stolen from.

Any hacksaw can cut the case. A pointed pry bar will bust it out. I buy locks at mcmaster.com, amazon has everything too. Don't modify the case.

I wouldn't modify the case either. No need...
