I don't want two lenses just one
I will use it for family photos indoors and for macro photos

There are no macro zooms.
The nearest you'll get is the EF-S 60/2.8 macro.

Of course, if you don't need 1:1 macro, there are some zoom options that will get you about 1:3. Without checking, the 18-55 IS (STM), and Sigma 17-70 come to mind. There is also the new 24-70/4 IS.

try extension tubes. I have a set for incidental use, and they work fine.

I have never seen a standard zoon bear the macro symbol. The Tamron 70-300 does a macro 1:2 but thats not much good as a carry around lens. #

I to have that tamron you use, and it does focus quite close. I bought a set of close up filters for it and though it will never match a macro lens, they are not bad

thanks a lot
I have the canon extention tube 25 but the Tamron not sharp for small tiny things like the macro lenses
it's sharp for portraits
seems to me that i have to get a used 18-55mm lens and use it reversed for macro
the money is not a problem for me
i like a small bag for one body and one lens with a flash
that's why I sent all my lenses for sell
Thanks again

The new Canon 24-70mm f/4.0L IS. But it is f/4.0 and macro is at 70mm (or that is where you have to enter the macro mode) 0.7X life-size. It is also not cheap.

I've never used it, but it may fit what you want - if you are willing to start at 24mm and only have f/4.0. It is the closest I would think to your requirements. For family inside chances are you will want flash. (But) I would think there are times with the f/2.8 you still want flash - I do.

Also - I've heard that it has a very close working distance in macro mode.

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim

The sigma 17-70 OS is a great general use zoom that has a close focusing distance (juat under 9") and does max reproduction of 1:2.8. While not a true 1:1 macro lens it is better then the 1:4.5 that the tamron does. Though you sacrifice the constant f2.8 of the tamron and the 17-70 is f2.8-4.

If you want a one lens "solution" then it's a great option. Though for macro shots I beleive a dedicated macro lens is better. The canon 60mm macro is a great macro lens for crop cameras.

haha for sure. But you wanted macro AND general use.. The 4 you mentioned are great macro lenses but not so much general use. The other option would be a Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro ..

well then maybe you shouldn't have decided to sell them...if you're after a one lens solution, you're going to have to accept the fact that you can't get the macro shots you were able to before

as for zooms, sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 offers i believe 1:2 magnification...if you need more than that the 24-70f4IS is your next best shot
