Only sorry that I sold my perfect sigma 85mm f1.4 and kept 85L. The differences between two aren't worth $1000. But keeping L should give me bragging rights and better pictures.:)

Just take it back from Talley's hand lol

I bought my Sigma for $700 brand new, that's a third of the keg, and my copy is tad sharp wide open :)

I'll never part with it....again :p

I know stupid move. I really wanted to try the 85L II and it is nice but sigma is just same. Now only thing left to try is the 200 f2 L.:)

Only regret I had was not picking it up sooner. :) Its not my most used lens, but its def one of my all time favorites.

Didnt you have 50L Kevin? Gave up after getting the 85L II? Or perhaps I am mistaken.

I just picked up an 85L v1 from FM for $950....and while I loved my Sigma 85 1.4, I figured it was worth the $250 increase to try the glass keg for the first time. :)

I did...just sold the 50L with the 85L in the mail. I picked up a Canon 50mm 1.4 to fill the void, hopefully I'm not disappointed, but the 85L was too tempting to pass up.

Direct comparison of lenses from another thread.
Not exactly what is being debated here, but an example of cost versus results.

^^^
thanks for that - a really great example of what it can do
though honestly I wish that could have been vs the sigma and the canon 1.8....
but it just makes my decision much easier.... :)

Direct comparison shots are very hard to find, I always seek them out. Thank you smorter for making this one.

I would never sell mine unless there is a new version which is significently better. It is by far my favorite lens. I don't use my 70-200LII much because I love the 85L.

I own the 85LII, and used to own 85 1.8. mostly use it to take pictures of my children. I had the 1.8. a few years ago, I got a good deal on a near new 1.2II, and bought it with the idea of trying it and flipping it. withing a week I knew I am selling the 1.8.
the lens has great color and contrast. Can it be mimicked in post? may be. It also gives wonderful results wide open, with adequate dof for full body shots. in half body shots, your really need to pay attention to them been fairly square to camera if you want both eyes in focus. in tight head shots, you will get the ear and nose OOF and eyes in focus if they are perfectly squared at the lens. Some like that look, others use it to put down the 85 1.2. to each his own.
I have never found the focus speed to be objectionable, and I used it to shoot my young children.

As why the images in L thread are nicer than sigma, may be it has to do with the body, (may be more are full frame on the L), percent of in focus shots, a little bit of color, and some placebo effect.
I am fortunate enough to have a job that allows me to pay for a sometimes expensive hobby. fortunately, the L lenses hold their value well, and I consider the images of my family captures with the lens priceless to Me. all at 1.2 to illustrate the point of depends on head/head shoulder, full body.

kevindar - see those are the type of pics I would love to say that "i took them" of my own family and kids
and why I am looking forward to the getting a fast 85
but why I wonder how well you could have taken the same moment with the sigma 85 and gotten the same outcome -
i.e. your skill vs the tool.....

but then again - maybe that extra 1/3 stop and rendering indeed is the difference....
I am lucky enough to have the funds for either I choose.... I just want to choose correctly...and not be fooled by brands (in either direction)
