Hello,

Rosette Nebula from friday night with a 6nm Ha filter on a modded 7D, 60mm refractor and EQ6 GT.

About an hour exposure, 2 minutes / shot. This is red channel only, 32 stacked frames.

Lot of hard work gone into production here.
One question: When Canon makes 60a directly of the factory dedicated for Astro, why did you opt to modify a 7D? Both should cost almost the same. Just curious.

Thank you for your kind words. I like to have the info organised :)

I've had the 7D for a while, and I also have a good friend that is delighted to do such things, so it made sense.

I haven't followed the market - so 60a is like the old 20a? No IR-cut?

^^ Thanks for the reply.
Yes 60Da is the successor of 20Da and unlike the 20Da that had everything astronomical including it price! 60Da was offered very affordable and it seems price did not appreciated in time so a very good deal indeed.

Very interesting read. I'll upgrade when they'll make a monochrome version ;)

the 60Da is not even close to any modded camera. I have a 60Da and a 60D and a modded T2i. If you want the H-alpha you need the mod. The 60Da does ok for the Ha. But my advice would be get a 60D, have a Full mod done to it and get Astronimik's L, OWB, CLS-CCD, and Ha filters. You have a very versatile camera that does everything VERY well. And it will be less than the 60Da. You can even get the IR-Pass filter and shoot IR photography.

here is where I had my T2i modded. and there is more info on the filters as well as some IR photographs

Yep, the guy from Astronomik has some nice narrowband filters. The 6nm Ha gives impressive results so I'm getting the OIII as well.

I can't do infrared, because the original IR-cut filter was replaced with one that transmits Ha, but still cuts from 710nm or so...

Ok, I misread that, I thought you were fixing to upgrade. I've had fun with the IR, but for astro I think it only helps with planetary cloudbands. I may have my 60D modded but I haven't decided on Full or Astrodon. Do you have suggestions? I wondered if the OWB filter still gives the same result with the Astrodon.

The Astrodon I have shifts the WB considerably in the reds, so you will not have the same colour balance like you would with an unmodded camera. I haven't tried the Astronomik OWB filter, but the fixed Astrodon prevents any dirt getting on the sensor.

WB can easily be fixed in post processing (I assume you shoot RAW) so it's not an issue. Focus shift is another thing to take into account, as the light path will be different from the one canon used to calibrate the autofocus. Minor shifts can however be compensated with the camera's software.

Hap's mods with clear or Astrodon keep glass there to keep out dust and also keep auto-focus working.

So it only took 2 minutes to pull the red off the histogram? What is the aperture of your 60mm? I have been curious about the noise in a 7D since it is magnesium, thus allowing better thermal transfer with ambient temps, looks good in this shot!
