Dunked my rig in 3 feet of water yesterday. I can see water inside lens and water spots on the inside of the main glass where 2 drops dried.

Is there any fixing this or should I just order a new one?

Well, if your really adventurous you can take the thing apart and try and clean it but odds are that the lens is dead. Canon will not fix it.

Whoa! Sorry about that. That is one of the few older lenses I regret selling. I'd drop it in a bowl of rice, put the lid on, and wait a week. My guess is that it is dead, though.

Find a local repair shop that'll fix it at a lower labor rate, than Canon. Or, look for a used one. The lens should be taken apart and cleaned as the dried water spots will leave marks on the elements.

There might be a chance. Dry it and then put in a bag with rice.
Even if the lens miraculously works, the glass with be dirty... but to answer your question, yes water doesn't necessarily mean broken..

There is no way a box of rice or similar will do a thing on its own - you'd need to strip it down if you can see water inside. Even then I give the USM unit next to no chance, and the aperture not much more.

Those things depending on the version can be had quite inexpensively on eBay. The 2nd version, the one with "macro" on the barrel instead of the flower icon, is virtually the same as the "II". See http://www.ebay.com …enses&hash=item35d165b43f (external link)

I'd recommend giving it a bath in distilled water before completely giving up on it.

This will cost you $2 and likely has as much a chance of working as making a silk purse out of a sows ear.

Even if you dunk it into distilled water to neutralize the salts and such, you are still going to have to take it apart to clean and lubricate everything. This is not an easy undertaking but can be done.

A bath in 95% EtOH would be better. Water isn't going to dry up water.

Alcohol bath will push out the water.

It will also dissolve any lubricant inside and spread it over the optics.
