The only way I can see to access the flash compensation is to go into the menu and scroll down through the settings to adjust it , is there a short cut or quicker way to do this process?

You can adjust FEC from the same screen you turn the flash on/off in (right side of the rocker switch, flash icon).

There should be a small bar in the lower right showing flash output, and it's adjusted with the front (lens) dial. At least it is on mine - I can't recall if I had to do anything special to set it up that way, or if it's a default setting.

Much quicker than going through the menu.

I set up the custom ring to do exposure compensation. When using the flash, all i have to do is hit the flash button once and then I can use the dial to turn FEC up and down as much as needed (at least the +2 or -2 limits).
