Triple redundancy is the word around here. Photos are stored on a separate drive from my main drive, then copied to an external HD, and RAW files are written onto DVDs.

Main Catalog on main HDD, daily backup onto separate partition, DVD backup every 200 images and also regular backups to yet another HDD partition and DVD thru PSE3. You think thats enough? Am also planing a NAS HDD thru my wireless link.

For me I used 4 GB DVDs and also backup to external hard drive, HD my original RAW files. I also backup to DVD the photos I create from the RAW files.

If you are up to the task you can build an inexpensive, high quality external drives from www.NewEgg.com (external link). They sell bare HDs and external HD cases. The last one I build a few months ago was a 250 GB Maxtor Drive and external case for it and the cost was around $125.

Offsite backups on a hard drive, DVDs aren't reliable enough.

Jerry, My full catalogue is some 4100 mixed JPG and RAW files and fits on 3 DVDs at the moment. - standard single sided 4.7 GB ones. My Photoshop Elements Catalog is nearly 12 GB.

I back everything up to a usb external hard drive which protects me in case my pc crashes. Secondly, I also burn a couple of dvd's, one of which I keep, the other one goes to an entirely different location. That way, in case of theft or fire, I'm covered.

I have 70GB of photos, a lot of which is weddings, I can't afford to lose any. CDs and DVDs regularly fail. Yes I mean copy the images to an external, portable hard drive, and keep that hard drive someone safe outside of your house - in case the house burns down or you get burgled.
