I grabbed a relative's camera to take this shot, and was disappointed to learn later that he had it set to .jpg only. It's my first attempt at shooting a horse. I would appreciate any feedback.

I would love to learn to shoot horses better. I live in a place where horses roam free, often eating from my bird feeders, and I have many opportunities.

That is a good-looking horse, though I'm not sure it's a good horse picture. I don't know enough about that. Based on knowledge of portraiture, I would think you might want to give a bit more room for the horse to look in to and perhaps something interesting that the horse is looking at or doing.

As someone who works in the horse industry... I would like to see more of the horse's neck and possibly the shoulder. When you shoot a person you typically do not just crop a floating head.

Unless I am shooting a horse straight-on, I typically include some of the body to anchor the photo. (Unless the horse has a conformation flaw or there is something else in the photo I need to hide.)

*Having said all that. I do like your image and the horse is quite attractive. Well done!
