I'm driving myself crazy !!!!
i have everything i need to make a rig except for the pole/boom.
what do you guys use for the pole or the boom arm ???

i went to home depot and all they have is heavy steel piping. I'm looking for something lighter and just as strong .
i wanna photograph my 2012 Nissan 370Z Nismo and with that said i also need to fit this pole/boom/pipe in my car so it needs to be sectional or telescopic.

any help is much appreciated .

Home Depot steel piping is the cheap alternative.

I made a carbon fiber rig by buying carbon fiber tubing and having machined aluminum ends to attach each tube.

You'll find any solution that is cheap not to have much mobility.

Details sir! Where did you source the CF tubing, how long... how much bow do you get when mounting?

The tubes were ordered from this company.

I have seven two foot sections. The tubes are 2 1/4 inches outside diameter, and just under 2 inches inside diameter. I opted for 2 foot sections because I often travel by plane and wanted to be able to fit them in a suitcase if the need arises. I don't need a 25 or 30 foot rig because I don't bother doing rig shots with lots of space. Most of the rig shots I do are for magazine covers, the cars have to be prominent, so no need for any more sections. having said that, I do plan on getting perhaps an 8 foot carbon section at some point.

They are joined together by aluminum inserts that I had custom machined. The inserts couple together. A friend has the same type of carbon tubes, however, his are joined by aluminum tube inserts that get pinned together.

As with any rig there is some flexing, I use a ratcheting tie down to stiffen the rig. Also, I don't mount the suction cups to anything but glass. I will not put suction cups on anyone's paint or carbon fiber panels.

Thanks for the info! Do you have a BTS of the rig on a vehicle? Curious as to how it looks. What magazines do you shoot for?

I don't have any photos, however, I suspect that some of the folks whose cars I've shot might have something somewhere. As for the mags, if you click on the link below to my site, i have a section with "covers" where you can see some of the mags I work for and some rig shots that have been on covers.

Get in touch with VisualEchos (Andrew) he sells rigs. I purchased my boom from him over a year and half ago. Andrew is a great guy to do business with!
