So I'm tired (and slow) of setting the 10 second timer and running into the picture when I'm out with my wife or family. I wanted a radio remote and finally decided on the Camranger. I ordered it yesterday from B&H and it arrived today.

Now maybe I should have a cooling off period, but here goes, my first impressions (and I'm not the best reviewer):

1. The case is a bit cheaply made. The back pops off to insert the battery, which at least on mine required a very hard press to get it in. When the back is pressed back on, it's not easy to make the entirety of it snap back in place, but I did.

2. I plugged it into power with the supplied white micro USB and no indication whatsoever on the LED. It is supposed to glow from orange to yellow to green. NOTHING.

3. Once I got it turned on, downloaded the app, attached to the camera, it was working, though it gives a number of errors at times, unable to change the EC, etc.

Then whenever I download a pic and tapped on the screen of my iPad to see it closer to check focus, the app crashes. Every time.

Now this isn't a new product. I would think app crashes would be a thing of the past by now.

I emailed their support, and to their credit they replied very quickly. Said perhaps a bad micro cable. Perhaps a hardware issue. Not another word. Not allow us to send you a replacement cable, at least, not allow us to send another unit, not return it to the store. Nothing. Simple canned replies.

That is less than satisfying.

As an aside, there is a two position sliding switch on one side of the unit not mentioned, not even pictured in the instructions. When I asked about it, I'm told it has no functionality. Is that a joke? They don't even state that on the instruction card? Is that a future hidden, top secret button? Come on.

Follow up. The gentleman, Dave, who replied to me is the owner/developer. I was unaware of that. When I replied to him that I was not pleased with his canned replies, meaning no offer to replace it or the cable, he was taken aback and didn't know what I meant. He then said the units, but not the cables, are tested before they are sent out.

Well, it can't be the cable, as I've since told him, as the unit will not turn on unless I plug the cable in. So the cable is supplying power. However, it immediately shuts down when I pull the cable out and will not power back on.

We shall see where it goes from here. I realize nothing is perfect and items can have issues from time to time. I don't want to make more of this than it is.

As to the app crashing, he states it's stable and perhaps some memory is being bled away from it with other apps open. I had already made sure every other app was closed on the iPad. And it is a new iPad mini.

And after following his advice, I turned the iPad off and back on. And though that doesn't close apps, it is not not crashing.

If your intended use is as stated why not this? Wireless Shutter Release (external link)
Mine works very well!

EPILOGUE:

So, as usual, MEA CULPA. And at least I admit it when I'm wrong.

The power issue was caused by bent battery contacts. They are a bit flimsy and if one does not put the battery in just so, they are easily bent. However, they are easily bent back into place and it is now charging.

Dave was excellent in his thorough replies. I hope to make good use of the Camranger. If anyone else owns one, kindly chime in and tell us what you think.

I have one, and it works very well; I've used it on iPod Touch, Android (phone and tablet) and Windows 7.

As to the hardware quality, it's not originated by CamRanger. It's a "TP-Link MR-3040 Portable 3G/4G Wireless N Router", for which CamRanger has written a custom firmware. The three (not two) position switch that puzzles you is for the original purpose of the MR3040; it selects between 3G/4G, WISP and Access Point modes with the original firmware in place. 3G/4G position is closest to the USB and Ethernet ports.

Had me worried there for a minute. After fence sitting for a while, finally ordered and mine just arrived via UPS today. After seeing only good reviews before I pulled the trigger I opened your thread. Glad to hear of your resolution. Hopefully mine will perform as expected. Leaving the O soon so will find out when I get home.

To add to this, you can get the TP Link router for about $25 dollars, and then spend $8 on DSLRController, then download the free firmware from Chainfire (maker of DSLRController) and have the same thing.

I've been using this set-up to shoot tethered in the studio. Works quite well.

Hi, I've just ordered one but yet to arrive.

Must say Dave has been very responsive to my questions (pre order) so top marks for customer (/sales) service.

Cheers

Dave was great. 'Twas I who was jumping to conclusions.

But as to build, I hear Jon that it's not a Camranger "original" manufacture and that explains quite a bit. But perhaps there was better OEM equipment to choose from. The battery terminals are quite flimsy and easily damaged, especially if you're as dumb as me and press the battery by the rear first.

Nice, just wish DSLRcontroller was available for iOS.

Thanks for blazing the trail. I don't like to read instructions on things I think should be intuitive; but after reading your post I VERY CAREFULLY inserted the battery...bottom end first. Snapped right in and everything seems to be working as promised. Thanks for posting, you might have saved me from the same fate!

Congrats. Few more posts and you can be a noob like me. As to me not posting my posts are generally so useless as to not really count anyway. The only real value to post count is when you sell on the forum, people can have a modicum of confidence in ya.

Glad you put the battery in right
Mark
