I bought the G16 in December. Hoping to take it on trip to Europe instead of lugging my DsLR equipment.

Like the ergonomics, controls, feel of the G16. Viewfinder is a bit useless though.

Been taking pictures indoors and a few outdoors. Outdoors this camera does just okay but indoors quite disappointing. I also find that once you crop slightly, the picture quality goes down quite a bit.

My problem is that I had the Oly EPL5 for a while. If I compare the pictures between the G16 and the PL5, the PL5 crushes the G16.

I'm back to square one here. I have a feeling that anything lower than m43 or ASP-C will probably disappoint my pixel peeping brain :)

What would you do?

Should I go back to the EPL5, or go NEX5T, or........??

Any recommendations/comments appreciated.

You have to shoot using the camera with which you feel most comfortable. If you don't like the G16, don't use it. (I have a G9, and the viewfinder *is* useless.)

There's another part of it though that is up to you. I have a 5DM3, and I also have an Elph 330, recently purchased new. Below is a link to a thread I started for the Elph 330. So far all of the pictures are mine. (As an aside, I won't feed the thread much more unless there is participation from others.) The funny thing is that this little camera that costs 1/40 of my typical 5DM3 kit produces reasonable pictures. It doesn't even have Manual mode. No matter, I bend it to my will when taking pictures.

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1353517

The pictures on that thread range from "normal" exposure to ISO 3200. Are they as good as what I can make with my 5DM3? No, but they're good shots, and I'm pleased with them.

Below are two comparisons, one is from a G9 and the other from a 60D. Both are cropped, and both used off-camera flash. I tried to make everything the same for the two (and missed on focal length on the G9 by 8mm). Is there a difference? Sure, but not much. Can you tell which is which?

Perchance you have a bad copy of the G16. I can't imagine the G16 taking a picture that is less than the G9.

Appreciate the info.

Yes, under good lighting conditions, most cameras in this price range will take decent pictures.
You have off camera flash for pictures com both cameras. I will be using this camera on my travels....so will b shooting under all lighting conditions. Can't compare off camera studio type setting to on the fly picture taking though.

Nice pics in the thread. The sepia setting does help cover any noise or dr issues.....good on ya for choosing that.

Perhaps you could post a couple of your indoor pictures you find disappointing? I find my G16 great for capturing those quick "Kodak Moment" snapshots, when i don't want to pull out the 5DII.... and as such I really will only be using these photos for sharing with friends and family via social media, so there will be no larger prints and no real pixel peeping.. ;)

I've actually been very impressed with the indoor shots and the G16's AWB and the jpegs right out of the camera. That being said, the G16 does seem to pretty heavily process the jpegs. Are you shooting jpeg or raw?

Only recently bought a G16 but with the few pictures I've taken so far I'm very pleased with the quality of those taken inside and out.

You've only got to look at those in the pictures thread to see what can be achieved.

Perhaps you have got a dodgy example? As said you need to post some photos for us to have a look at.

Then there is ETTR. Under exposing to keep ISO down is a killer. Without seeing your pix and exif can't really say tho.

Well, a little more shooting and getting used to the G16. Will be a keeper for me. Nice as a small pocket camera.

On another note, just sold all of my DSLR equipment and stepping into the micro 4/3 world. Just got tires of lugging around all of that heavy equipment. The though of not carrying the 70-200 2.8 and the 100-400 again is quite refreshing.
Ordered the OMD-10 and a bunch of fast lenses. So much more compact than the DSLR's. Should cover all of my needs.
Hope to have some G16 pics up here in the near future.
Cheers.

I take it you are happy with the quality of the photos now?

Your answer: don't crop. Move closer instead of taking photos from across the room. The G16 has a good 140mm zoom and a fast lens.

I have two Canon SLR's (40D, 7D), and a G12. Recently purchased a Fuji X100S, and am blown away by what it does.

The Fuji X100S is a fixed focal length so don't think we can compare it to any camera with a zoom.

Accept that the images are clean enough they can be cropped. Maybe not cropped to 140mm effective length of the G16 (very nice at f2.8), but croppable to 70mm+ IMHO. Agree if tele is your need, the X100S isn't the best choice.
