I am a newb so please forgive me. I am trying to adhere to the rules of the forum. I am new to photography, i have been playing with a canon 20D for a few years and wanted to step up to a real full frame camera. I recently purchased a used canon 1Ds MkII on ebay. I just received it and did some intial testing before my return period expires. I am seeing a white bar appear occasionally across the center of the photo. I was hoping to solicit some help from experts what may cause this and is it something that can be repaired easily or should i just return the camera and look for another. I purchased the camera on ebay from a camera store hoping it would help get me a reliable camera to really cut my teeth on, but i am wondering if i just got taken on ebay.
I have included 2 images of the same subject shot at the same settings and seconds apart. One has the white bar and the other does not. I was reading another post and eveyone seemed to think it was a shutter going bad, but there were no photos I could compare with. I am attempting to upload a couple of photos to show you what i am referring to, but i am not sure it will be visible at that small resolution. I have the images available in raw format if you want the full image.

please help a newb get started on the right foot.

thanks
jeff

It doesn't look like the classic symptoms of shutter failure to me, but it is plausible. Could you post larger images with the EXIF data intact please? Shutter failure will tend to manifest more often at faster shutter speeds.

I am attempting to upload the files you requested, but i am not certain the jpg will have the info you requested. Unfortunately photobucket would not allow me to upload the CR2 files. If you have an alternative suggestion i am all ears.

with bar

Heya,

The white bar looks like either random light, or a touch of over exposure due to shutter not completely shutting for a split second. The black suggests some funkiness too, in the lower right, it's different each time.

Take some control photos in a room with light that cannot change to make sure.

And I would send it back. For sure. Unless this is user error (but I don't think it is).

Also, convert to JPG and host. Look into photobucket or flickr. No one wants to download RAW files just to see this.

Very best,

thank you for the close observation. I had not even noticed the black spot on the bottom. I was so focused on the white band I clearly over looked that. thank you

If you are getting identical results on other subject material, then the camera is toast. It will cost several hundred dollars to fix the shutter ($300 or so maybe?). If that makes the camera over its value, certainly send it back. If you still have a good deal after having Canon doing their thing, then possibly have it fixed. If you do the latter, ask for a partial refund to help offset those costs.

i paid almost $1000.00 for the camera. I watched other similar cameras average about $900.00. it was a bit higher than others, but i had hoped that the camera store would ensure that i would get a better product from a reputable source. Seems like i may have mislead myself. The camera store even said they would warranty it, so lets see if that even holds true.

I would go full refund. Repair won't be worth the cost here. Don't let them haggle you into sending it in to be "fixed." Just get a refund. Move on to another camera. I suggest you buy from KEH or something if you want a quality used product with warranty.

Full refund, not as advertised, don't let them handle under warranty - you don't want to wait for however long it takes them do you?

To be fair it would've been missed by accident or developed while sitting around, especially if they offered a warranty.

You should test your camera at the fastest shutter speeds like 1/4000 and faster..most shutters that are not working reliable anymore show theirs problems at faster shutter speeds.
