The only bald eagles that I have seen in my urban area are a family atop a cell phone tower. The tower is 160.1 feet tall. I only just discovered them the other day, and haven't had a chance to go back with my camera. My longest lens is my Tamron 70-300 VC. Will this be long enough? I do have a Sigma 135-400mm coming on Friday, as well as a Tamron 200-400mm. For that distance, will any of those have enough reach at that distance? Quick triangulation math gives me an estimated distance to the birds of about 360 feet. Would I be wasting my time, or is it worth trying?

If steroids are illegal for athletes, should PS be illegal for models?

I'd use one of the 400s and see what you get. That's a fair way up, but still possible to get something out of it.

And, just because that sounds *mildly* unusual, are you certain you've got eagles up there and not osprey? In the urban areas, it's normally osprey building nests in the cell towers...the towers don't normally allow the nest structure that eagles prefer to build.

EDIT: As an example, this is a heavy crop from 400mm, at about 280/300ft from the road

300 isn't really going to be worth it, from ~350'. Depending where you shoot from, it might just be an unflattering angle anyways.. if you're almost directly below. You don't want a pic of their underside. ;)

I shoot GBH's often from ~300 feet (with 420mm on crop), and have to crop over 50%. Osprey' (similar size to an Eagle), from 100' i have to crop fairly hard.

This Osprey is a good 150' away (420mm). >50% crop.

Yes, i know the highlights are blown. :oops:

It's a documented nest, and I (finally) got to actually see them the other day. Florida (and other states maybe) has this site - https://public.myfwc.com …s/nestlocator.aspx#search (external link)
which lets you put in a zip or address, and a radius, and it shows you known nests, with activity data. The cell tower one I have found, and can get to. Here's the map of it (it's the northern one).

Here is the cell tower from google maps. It's right on a busy street, in a residential/industrial area. The nest used to be a few blocks over in a large cemetery, but they moved to the tower about a year ago. Weird.

Eagles will nest on anything tall that is able to support the weight of their nests. In the Columbia George they will nest on the rock faces if no large trees are around. I would think that in a place as flat as Florida, a cell tower would be perfect.

@OP

Even if you were to get close enough, the images aren't going to be very photographically pleasing because you will be looking nearly straight up. I would find out where Bald Eagles are seen frequently feeding in Florida and target those locations instead. Cell towers aren't going to make great pictures.
