Over-priced in my opinion. The lens is very soft wide open at 300mm. Look at the Tamron 70-300.

Hmm. In the center, wide open @300, I'm not sure I'd vote for either lens but the Canon seems marginally better than the Tamron in this test:

I have never used the Tamron. I had the Canon, which I used mostly at or near 300mm and f/5.6. The kicker is that I paid full retail brand new for that. I had it a month and sold it for $300. I upgraded to the 100-400L, which is much better, and costs accordingly.

Good on a FF IMO, where pixel density is lower and 300mm F/5.6 is OK. Otherwise wide-open up to 220mm or F/8 at 300mm comes good.

I owned one for years and sold when I didn't use it much after getting a 400 prime.

If the same price I think I'd choose the Tamron version these days.

yeah thats why i picked up an old 100-300 5.6L on the cheap...

For the money that's a nice deal. No, it's not the equal of the other, more-expensive options, but it doesn't cost like them either, and stopped-down it sharpens up acceptably.

For $650 I'd pass but for $300.... (I don't need one, but if you don't have that range covered, well...)

Mine arrived yesterday. It was the genuine Canon box and packaging so nothing funny going on here, just a great deal.

I've had mine for a couple weeks. Came bundled with a 6D. I tried to sell it here and on CL. NO BITES. I might just have to keep it.

I would've thought it would work well with the 6D. Reasonably sharp, compact and light weight. Sometimes I regret selling mine, I got $350 for it 2-3yr ago however it cost me $1000 new.

I hope that was Aussie dollars. That lens goes for about $650 in the US. I had mine a few weeks (yes, I bought it new) and sold it for the only offer I could get: $300. I was glad to be rid of it. Lesson learned. Buy used. You lose next to nothing if you change your mind.

It was Aussie dollars, but it was a long time ago too - it wasn't a particularly cheap lens when it came out. However the exchange rate has been all over the place in that period of time, anywhere from 50 US cents over 1 US dollar.

Either way I felt like I let it go for too cheap but I could buy it back for even less now, so I guess it's no big deal.
