i have a 5d2 and im just tired of teh bulk for everyday shooting, im keeping it for my pro work but i just need something i carry carry all the time.

image quality is paramount to my choice. i'd prefer the 2.8 aperture of the g16 as opposed to varying to 5.6 of the g1x. the sensor is much larger in the g1x too... i like to take lots of candids, which means indoors and lower light.

im also looking at the sony rx100 or rx100II.

thoughts?

I had the G1x, also a s100, currently a sony rx100. I bought the G1x because I did not want to take my "stuff" on vacation again. The G1x image quality is outstanding, and I would say very close to your 5d. What I found , for my purposes, is the g1x was just a little to big, meaning you need a small bag, I had a apex100, so it's like bringing a camcorder. I ended up always leaving it home, and grabbing the s100. The s100"also takes great pictures, lowlight it struggles a little. I ended up selling both, and even though I am a life long canon guy, bought a sony rx100. This camera fits in your cargo shorts, jacket, what ever and is very close to the g1x image quality. On reviews, it is suppose to be better, my eyes it is slightly less, but debatable. I basically use the sony for everything, throw it in my jacket going to family functions, going to the beach..vacations...we went to Disney, on rides it was in my pocket instead of have this big bag and worried it was going to get wet. etc...etc....my 7d is down to sports, not much else.

I,ve had my G1x for almost 2 years now and had been looking as an alternative in the EOS-M, Sony nex 6 and sony rx100. My G1x has gone through some rough conditions and got a soaking from seawater last week so I was wondering if I need a new compact what would it be.
I've tried out the EOS-M and the 2 Sony's and found them too fiddly on the controls also the Sony's seem to require an extra step to get to the equivalent canon functions.
Personally I'm going to go for the G1x mark11 rumoured to have better focussing, wider zoom range and improved image quality on the original, the G16 is getting there but won,t be as good as the G1x for noise in low light situations.

I am in the same boat as the original poster, 5 d mk11 and L lenses but not wanting to lug them around all the time.Just read the report on the sony rx 100 11,one of the the biggest put offs for me is you can only charge the batteries with the camera :(
How long do the batteries last in real world photography and how long to charge up?

So many choices :)

same thing here... don't want to lug the 5D2 everywhere... also wife is due in April... so i picked up a G16. I tested out the Sony's but just didn't like the "feel" of them...

This morning's perfect example... came out in the living room to find my 7 year old the recliner. Quickly grabbed the G16 off my desk:

I am very impressed with the G16's battery life! It's simply amazing! Even using the flash and constantly chimping! ;)

well i bought a g1x over the weekend. i havent had a chance to really put it through the paces, but my few initrial thoughts:

this thing is big. too big to fit in my pockets which is a concern. unless this thing wows me with image quality i may turn it for something smaller. even the Sony nex models are smaller.

i do like all the manual buttons, very easy to set this camera to how you want. i have yet to open the manual and i have it all figured out.

af is on par with what i'd expect out of a mirrorless camera.

i wish the max aperture was maybe f4 at the telephoto end 5.8 seems really slow.

i wish it focused closer while not in macro mode.

mainly i just wish this thing was smaller, i may try out an rx100 after i see what this can do.

And to top it off, they will be announcing the G1X II (mark 2 version) this week.
If you want pocket ability, get the G16 (awesome camera, I have owned the G15 as well)
If you want a bigger sensor get the NEW G1X II That will be announced this week!
You do LOVE Canon cameras after all don't you? New tech will always be coming down the pipeline, get one that works for exactly what you want it to do.

Most any G will make a great snap shot, even walk around camera. I had the G12, G15,and the G1X all similtaneously. In time however I found that I really still had a need for DSLR for certain needs and I just sold the G1X and have the G15 on Ebay. I settled for the overall complete capability of the G12 with all the accessories I have for it, and purchased a like new 30D with a 550EX, sigma 10-20, both kit level STM lenses, 50mm 1.8 mark1 and an assortment of tubes, filters, closeup lenses much of which I had already accumulated from prior to going with the later G series cameras. I feel I have more than I will ever need in these two cameras and ALL purchased with very reasonable pricing.

G12 in my humble opinion is still the best G yet for overall features. But I think once you have gotten bit by the DSLR bug, you can never leave it completely.

Big, yup....that's why I ended up selling mine and getting a sony rx100.

But if a g1x mkii comes out, I will probably buy it, my wife says I need therapy:rolleyes:

I went into our large department store which has a camera section.I tried the G1X ,RX 100 and the G16 and the RX 100 was just so finicky and small .The two Canons ,not a huge amount in them ,they both felt really nice so will come down to each cameras pro s and cons.
I was gobsmacked by the speed of the focussing :).

Oh course if the G1 X Mark11 comes out soon that may alter things again.

Sorry Mike, but why did you buy one if you find it too big for your pockets?!!

I see the G16 and G1X as sitting between a compact and a DSLR and having bought a G16 will be using that when out walking etc. when I have the benefit of bigger pockets in my coat and/or using a Canon camera case and don't want to be lugging a DSLR around.

When something smaller is called for I use a compact. Whilst generally lacking some of the performance/facilities of the bigger cameras some do allow shooting in RAW which is good.

You can't really blame Canon for making the G1X too big, it is what it is. As others have said, sometimes a well specced camera can be too small.

I resemble that remark :D However I would never complain about the size of the G12 ( I just bought mine 4 weeks ago) as it is way smaller than my previous G3!
Really worried that the Gx1 Mk ii will also loose the articulated screen.
As much as I would love a DSLR I cant justify its use for my work needs and a combination of G12 and Gx1 works well for me.

The G1X Mk II has a flip screen which just moves vertically, probably not a bad thing.

Work needs, work needs - it's a hobby so you can justify anything!!

i couldn't try it out first since no stores near me carry it. i had to order it online.
