which 18-55 for my old lady?

since i got my 5D2, my old lady 30D is mostly paired with the 50 f1.4 after i sold my 17-55 to fund partially for the 5D2.

i want to get a cheapy lens for her, so i can use it as a walk around camera to shoot with during tradeshows, etc.

i see there are 2 versions of the 18-55: 18-55 II, or the 18-55 STM. any difference between the two? they both shows they have image stabilizer, but besides that.. is it just one is silent and 18-55 II is not?

i see the 18-55 II new on ebay for $99, which seems like a good deal, unless all you lens gurus tell me otherwise.

Any of the IS incarnations will be fine. Just avoid the original 18-55 non IS as its dreck.

The 18-55 IS mkii is fine.
But the newer STM version is better... Silent auto-focus, non-rotating front element, better IQ etc..
You can now get the STM versions at reasonable prices.

Just going on what I have read the IQ is the same, but I have no personal experience to draw on, they introduced the IS version just after I bought my last new crop camera.

It's been a long time since I had the EF-S version of the 18-55mm IS. I have the EF-M version of the 18-55mm IS STM, which autofocuses faster and quieter supposedly. The optics should be a tad better from what I've read. I see them selling for $130 on eBay.

KEH.com, look for the 18-55 II IS. The STM is great for video. But I wouldn't stress getting it, if it costs significantly more. Most kit lenses like this should be able to be found for $70ish honestly. They're common, good lenses, but common.

I'd take a look at some images of the STM vs the MkII, I think you might be surprised ... even for a "kit" lens. Aside from the AF motor, there is new/additional glass.
I've had both as well as a MkI ... the STM is nothing to scoff at, in the right hands. Amazon had them for $129, last time I checked. Broken up from a kit.

New copies of the 18-55 STM that have been separated from a kit are available from Amazon for approximately $120 with shipping. They are listed under the used category. I sold my very good EFS 15-85 and used the proceeds for the 18-55 STM plus a 85mm 1.8.

For the part of the range that the 18-55 covers I think its about the same as the 15-85 STM from an image prospective. I wanted the 85 1.8 for indoor sports such as basketball.

There have been a total of 8 different EF-S 18-55mm lenses produced by Canon.

The best one is the 18-55mm IS STM because of it's non-rotating front element and STM AF. It also has a really nice hood. The other two IS versions are probably almost as sharp and can be had a little cheaper.

I would definetley advise paying the little extra for the STM version because it is a VERY good lens. Most reviews say it is sharper than the 2 older IS versions and just about as sharp as anything around.

Heaps. For a kit lens, the new 18-55 is actually very sharp. Look for the 18-55 IS STM..

To add,, my wife has been using the 18-55 IS STM on my old 20D with excellent results.

18-55 IS STM on my 700D. Straight out of the camera.
