False impressions of 6D and 5D (Mark I)

When I bought my first 5D MKI I had the impression I did a downgrade from my 40D, technical old, limited menus and buttons, but IQ (ISO up till ISO 3200), bokeh,... was a big step forward!
That's from a semi pro to an older pro camera.

Now I have the same feeling with my new 6D (comming from a 5D MKII).
Cheaper feeling body (like I have a 650D with lots of functions), but the IQ is also a big step forward, ISO 12800 is surprisingly good, no disturbing noise!
That's a body downgrade from a pro to a starters fullframe with IQ upgrade.

The "feeling" of a body/functions can be misleading, it can feel old or cheaper, but the IQ inside makes the difference!

Same here, just got my 6D to replace a 5D MKII .. the MKII just feels more 'solid' and pro-like, but it's an illusion, the 6D testing I'm doing tonight prove it otherwise, it's just as solid but with better features

Heck, any of the current Rebel line cameras through the pro bodies all have excellent image quality. I would be happy to own any of them.

I never felt it as a downgrade going from my 5D2 to the 6D. Sure the body is smaller and lighter, but never felt cheap! People great exaggerate the plastic build, which is only the top cover. I prefer the smaller size and weight, feels great in the hand, the button placement is excellent, and only thing I miss is the joystick, but have quickly adapted to the pad. I was a strong hater of the 6D at first release (even check my old posts), but rented it once for a job to see how I like it and immediately fell in love. IQ wise, not much different, I'd say a stop or so better high ISO, but low ISO still sucks, dynamic range poor, and horrid banding in the shadows.

IQ is only a small part of the big picture to a good body...

Unfortunately they got rid of the AF-Joystick on the 6D.

I went from a 5Dc to a 6D. Upgrade all the way around. I like the controls better on the 6D. I like the smaller size, quieter shutter, modern firmware, better screen. About the only thing I don't like about the 6D vs 5Dc was the price.

I primarily switched for the native WIFI support and the extra stop of ISO is welcome. No other WIFI solutions where good enough for me, and as I wanted something reliable to always work, decided to trade out the 5D2. Its proved invaluable to me so far.

the wifi is good, but has issues. Constant disconnect/reconnect is normal behavior, the feature itself is kinda gimmicky/limited to only a few applications. GPS is borderline unusable since you risk leaving it on and draining your battery dry.

I love the size of the 6D, but lack of joystick is still annoying to this day.

the vastly improved firmware is really nice. I dont have magic lantern and miss it dearly, but the new firmware, improved auto ISO, minimum shutter, make up for it. Still having changeable focus screens is real nice too. Gotta have my EG-D (should be standard).

I also went from a 5DII to a 6D, i don't feel it a downgrade at all. I do miss my 5D, but very much enjoy the lightweight and the wifi of the 6D for traveling. The 6D gets a lot of flack and i don't understand why, it does exactly what it was designed to do and does it very well at a very reasonable price.

Hasn't it been proven time and again, it's not about the equipment but the person taking the shot?

Or are cameras so badass they compose and take pics by themselves now

sure, lighter and smaller doesn't mean it's less "professional"

Consider trading both 6D and 5DII in on 5DIII. That is an amazing body.

Anything from a 10D -> 50D, 5D, 7D etc all feel similar to me, the ones with the rear preview/delete/etc buttons down the bottom being my biggest dislike.

I've not handled a 6D yet but the controls look horrible to me. That's not to say I'd take one over my 5D, I probably would, and feel that the smaller size for a FF is moving in the right direction, but there are areas that look like a bit of a downgrade to me.

I used a 5D Classic professionally for seven years before moving to the 6D. The 5D was/is a great camera, but the 6D is an upgrade in every imaginable way.
