Well, I guess its the footprint that's of interest. I just find this photography hilarious view of what the article is talking about.

That is funny, but I have to ask what kind of scientist would go out so ill-prepared as not to carry a metric ruler for the same purpose. You know, lens caps come in different sizes.

Possibly, but less likely.

For small objects, if no ruler came along, a coin is often used.

This site needs some careful excavation. I suspect an 800,000 yr old 5D3 and L lens can't be too far. The lens must be tested for weather-sealing; I bet it's still good.

And below that, the photographer, skeletal fingers clasped in place around the gear. I don't think the photographer is still good.
