I still have an older version of Aperture 2.1.4. I've been using an XTi and could upload just fine and import into Aperture. I just got a 70D, and it's set to the highest RAW file 20M. When I upload my pictures, they don't show up in Image Browser and I import them to Aperture and it says "unsupported file format". It's also unsupported by Preview (on the iMAC). What is going on?

Upgrade to aperture 3.x and get support for latest cameras....including 7D.

They are still RAW CR2 files. I didn't think they were any different. It's not just Aperture that isn't recognizing the file. It makes me think I should do a different file setting in the camera.

It makes a big different if that old version of Aperture never had a raw converter setup for the 7D cry file. All cr2 files are NOT the same.....otherwise Aperture , Lightroom, Photoshop and others would never need raw converter updates when new bodies are released.

Spend the $79 on an Aperture upgrade.

I think I will upgrade anyway, but I'm worried too about the other programs not viewing them.

Take a copy of the file and then convert the copy to dng.

See if the dng is readable by Aperture.

On an iMac, its Preview and Canon Imagebrowser. The software cd with the camera installed Imagebrowser EX, but you can't preview photos with that easily.

To get my RAW (CR2) files visible to Photoshop and other software I always use DPP (comes with the camera) and produce a TIFF version of the original (while retaining the CR2). This TIFF version is high quality and can be read by all the programmes I use.

iPhoto doesn't recognize the photos either. If it's something I modify in post, i'll import to Aperture, but a lot of times my wife just takes them and moves some to iPhoto. I guess i'll have to do a RAW and JPEG version in the camera. I don't know why no programs recognize the file format.

Have your tried converting to dng?

Because the camera didn't exist when the program was brought out. Even though the extension is the same the program must be either updated or newer than the model of camera.

Raw file support is on a per-camera-model basis, that goes for raw converters like aperture, as well as OS support. There is usually a lag between the introduction of a new camera and third-party raw support for it.

As stated above, new cameras are NOT supported by older software unless you update them, that is why none of your old software will read the files. All camera raw files are NOT the same.

I assumed all raw files were the same. I updated to OS Maverick last night and it seems like that helped. IPhoto recognizes the file now at least. I'll still update Aperture too.
