Photography is teaching me just how little my brain functions, could not even picture this in my mind, well until I saw this.

Hmm, I invented something like that too.

Same type pole, I already owned one, but I slid a 6 inch long section of "pool noodle" on the end and compress it to cause friction on the ceiling. Works well but I've never put anything other than foam core reflectors and flags on it.

Like the ring flash concept because of the quality of light. But no manual focus? Seems to use AF and distance-to-subject only.

i see little reason the light has to be so deep. As long as the front of the lens is shielded from direct light, and even a lens hood could help with that.

Yes, possibly a shallow dish and long lens combo. However, even the focus ring on the 180mm macro extends only about 5" from the body, the 100mm macro about 4", leaving little space to fit the flash head. Maybe the smallest speedlight could help.

I just saw this for the first time yesterday and thoughtit was pretty darn cool. I don't haveone but I'd try this if it is reasonably priced.

One of the comments had a link to this, great idea I think for 13.99.

Kind of neat. You could even get some aluminum foil (or shiny craft paper if you wanted to spring for it. A couple of sheet of foam core and a hot glue gun and build something similar I suppose.

Can't imagine trying to use that DIY ring flash in the OP for shooting bugs at MFD. But he gets a gold star for ingenuity and workmanship :)
